Maybe in need of a new rudder ... any guesses as to possible cost?

Hanse 31 ft. last year new Jefa rudder, 3 weeks delivery but new bearings delivered in 7 days so it could be prepared

Blade & stock was eu3500-00.
Bearings about eu200 ( forget exact cost of bearings)

Total cost complete inc labour fitting, storage of boat 4 weeks , lift & launch ,trip to & from home in essex to Inverness £ 5500-00 all paid & settled in a couple of weeks by GJW ,less £ 250-00 excess & that included an insurance surveyor to do a structural check on keel ( It was due to a grounding) when boat lifted at end of season in Bradwell
I don't understand those prices,I could make a new rudder for my Fulmar for a lot less that £500 including a 316ss stock and epoxy resin.

Be interested to see your costings. You could spend that having the stock turned up. Also , if the design is similar to mine then i doubt you could match the quality.
Have a look at Jefa's video on how they are made. I did think of having one made but looking at the so called professional original I soon decided to go with Jefa & have peace of mind. I was also stuck in Inverness & any delay would have cost money

And this rudder top.JPG

You can see how weak & bad the inside was

How do you bond the splines ( jefa's are splayed flats, not like these flimsy ones) to both skins.
This one was not hence half of it went walkabout.
Note how it was not full of foam so the aluminium was exposed to static salt water

I estimate that a rudder stock made of calibrated 316 rod would cost no more than €200.I would make the blade of solid hardwood or good quality exterior plywood.Plus epoxy, rovings and filler.Nowhere near £3000.Andrew Simpson had an article on the rudder of his boat and I would follow his practice.

An aluminium rudder stock is asking for trouble. That rudder is particularly badly built. I'm glad Westerly knew how to build rudders. My 35 year old one is solid as a rock.

I had new rudders ( cat ) made in stainless steel by a local fabricator , in Poole and he used 40mm solid stock then folded 2mm sheet around it . they were balanced and we copied the original design .
why use grp when s/steel will last forever ?
they are beautifully welded and completely watertight .
they are also 35 % lighter than the originals which were solid resin !
