I bought a dinghy mast the other day and got it home on the roof rack on my Peugeot 306 estate. What is the legal overhang one can have fore and aft? I actually had about 80cm forward and just over 1m aft. No problem getting home but did wonder if it was legal.

It used to be 1500mm beyond the lights but that was a long time ago. I don't know if this is still the case.

Overhang at REAR less than 1.0m = no action necessary.
Overhang at REAR between 1.0 & 2.0m = overhang must be made more visible (e.g. material of bright colour attached).
Overhang at REAR between 2.0 & 3.05m = rear marker board (with red & white triangles) must be fitted.
Overhang at REAR over 3.05 m, as above, plus 2 working days notice to the police must be given.

Overhang at FRONT less than 2.0m = no action necessary.
Overhang at FRONT between 2.0 & 3.05m = front and side marker boards must be fitted.
Overhang at FRONT over 3.05 m, as above, plus 2 working days notice to the police must be given.

VOSA have advised that that the overhang limits are not ''combined' limits: - i.e. 2m Front & 2m Rear together are permissible without a lighting board, or 3m Front & 3m Rear with suitable marker boards.

Cheers - good to know that taking my mizzen mast home on the roof of my Polo was actually legal. I had kind of assumed it wasn't :)

If you have a small box trailer tow that behind the car so that the mast doesn't stick out behind the trailer.

That will confuse-a-cop

Or use a scooter.
