Maxi 999

Does anybody out there have any opinion or experience of the Maxi 999? It seems to have preceded the Maxi 1000 but not be very different on paper. I wonder if that impression is correct because there does seem to be a significant price difference. Or are the 1000's just over priced, they certainly seem expensive on the secondhand market?
