Can anybody tell us how to loosen the steering wheel, its totally stuck. We´ve tried to loosen it by using a lever/extended lever turning the screw both ways it does move one bit. We need to take it off to put leather clothing on which is a nice work to do in front of the fireplace during the cold winter season.

Try the Maxi Owners Association? Ours is 1984 and stainless. We undo the nut and use a puller to fetch it off the taper. Earlier boats had wooden wheels etc.

Hi, Certainly remove the central nut, thereafter if it is stuck it may pay to regularly apply a releasing oil such as Gasoil, over a period of several days.

When I had similar problems I eased off all the steering mounting bolts by approx 1/8" and gently inserted 3 yard wedges behind the wheel boss, then using a wooden block on the spindle, I tapped the spindle forward, and the taper eventually released.

all what "Maxi" says is good.
Also; the wheel is stocked due to corrision between the use wheel, the wedge and the cone-axle is my guess.
u shoot the trouble;
-- rubber or plastic hammer -- give it a good shake.
-- puller - rather 3 or 4 "claws" than 2 -- dont rush it -- also use hammer in between -- for puller; have a look at http://www.nomo.se/svenska/index-sortiment2.html
-- dont forget to assemble with a good coat of grease
and i wish ya a good day!!

Thanks Garvellachs, we´ve tried the association, did not help.
We were warned not to break some part inside made of plastic by hammering too much.

Take care and regards from

hi Zed

Thanks for info but all that english kills me it´s another world out there with bolts and glands but I´ll ask the semantic to dechiffre the language and then I´ll try and figure it out in the flesh. Saw "The Negotiator" to try to relax from all Maxi-problem and Kevin Spacey gave good help there.

Kind regards

On Rogue, removing the nut and using a puller did the trick. have you tried a puller... halfords sell them.

On Quickstep, (Carter 42), in 1995, we forced a piece of rope in the gap between the pedestal and the wheel... I think we tied it to one of the spokes, and turned the wheel to wrap the rope around the spindle.... when the wheel had turned to full lock the other way, i think we untied the rope, turned the wheel back, then retied the ropw and turned the wheel again.

Doing this forced the rope to wind onto the spindle.

ISTR that, very gradually, the wheel was forced along the spindle, in such a way that no damage was caused.

Not sure if I've explained that very well, but I hope you get the principle.

Cheers

Richard
