Can anyone tell me with what colour I can paint said blue line. Is it possible to paint by hand (or other) or do I have to pay 2000euro? I mean thats unfathomable. What work is needed to get the old colour off? I need advice by someone who has actually done this him or herself. Is there a catch ?y
Kind regards

G'day Gorbel,

Talk to your local sign writer, they should have tape that is UV stable and simple to apply, they will also supply a single decal or a 2 part that only needs 2 cut to trim.

Avagoodweekend......

I think the original stripe around the windows was the same sticky vinyl as the stripes at the waterline. Use a signs place as recommended - they can cut it to size and shape by computer if you specify exactly what you want, for a few pounds or euros. We did this, stripping off a previous owner's paint using "Safer Stripper" - a gentler paint stripper. In fact is was slow work and wet-and-dry paper was more useful, being careful not to remove (too much) gel coat. There's helpful info here:

Sounds as though you have one of the older Maxi's, where most of the upper works have a navy blue gel coat embedded below the cream gelcoat of the decks etc. Clever moulding practice gave the effect of a blue line against the cream topsides.

No doubt though, subsequent owners will have painted this area many times - and there is no reason why you should not do so too. Take the old paint of with wet and dry and a bit of elbow grease. No problem

Don't know the shape etc but I've recently used tracing paper to go over worn out "go faster stripes" on my dehler before removing the old ones with window scraper ( stanley blade) didn't need heat gun. Had new decals made by "Signpost express" on Isle of Wight who scanned the image ... v.g service

I ordered for more then 10 years ago the original vinyl from the Pelle Petterson yard in Sweden. It was quite a job to get it back on since it has quite a size. I did only one side. Luckely I sold the boat and the new owner had to do the other side.
Next time I would paint it. I have seen in the meantime quite a number of MAXI´s where the blue was painted.
The vinyl was almost impossible to get on straight.

Dear Frankklose,
I get a curious fealing we may be talking about the same Maxi? If so the new owner did not succeed very well either. I appreciate your warning though, since I have painted a few things in my life and the thing is the original marin (darkblue) blue coulour or is it vinyl?? has been smeered over with hellblau paint spilling and bubbling. So what I will have to do, I guess, do a proper under job and find a paint.

Have fun

After yet another Kevin Spacey movie (Iron Will)

Hi Huyrob,
I must guess what tracing paper is but I will try and google the Signpost Express to hear what can be done. I´d rather not paint but have been warned that vinyl stickers are hard to handle. Using a heat gun is not my cup of tea either.

Thanks and regards

Hi,
What would I do without you maxi, what you explain is excactly what must be the case here. The Maxi is from 1975 and I can actually see the navy blue under the new lighter blue coulour. Is elbow grease a technical term, excuse me but I´m not good at the boat lingo?
I guess a paint shop can tell me what coulour to use and what technique. The former painter did spill a lot and the surface is bubble-like on some places -it just shouts out the stress and frustration of an amatour who knows he is one.
Thank you, I feel more confident now.

Kevin Spacey is my hero

Hi oldsaltoz,
your answer reminds me that this is how the boat got a new name, Sans Souci like a decal to stick to the stern. Changing name is bäd luck or something, but who wants to have a boat named gulli?? That way I will get excactly the same coulour, too. Thanks to Kevin Spacey I agree with your motto.

Thanks for the tip

Sorry for late relay. It was a MAXI 84 and I sold her in the Netherlands. She was a nice boat.
I would spray it, with the same colour shade as original. You will not notice the difference to the vinyl.
The trouble with the bubbles..... It was an expensive experience....
