Westerly GK24 :
From Hamble on a sunny day for a blast round the Solent with a competent crew: Force 7 southwesterly: loads of shelter.
Crossing Lyme Bay into the wind Force 3 with the family . Going the other way Force 4.
They will always forecast the maximum wind for the area in the forecast. This could be around a nearby headland, or a thousand miles away dependant upon the sea area.
Of as much interest is where the weather systems are, and what adjacent sea areas are getting, then you can decide whether the forecast is for you or not.
For the record I would / have set out with a gale F8 in the forecast. On notable occasions expecting to increase to a gale, but heading for shelter, on other occassions to be in open water than subsiding later, with good options for making harbour.
Can't imagine wanting to set out if any significant portion of the passage was in to it. Into a F6 can be exciting enough, where as downwind in a F8 can be quite pleasant.
it depends firts of the size of your boat, a force 7 is quite different for a 6,5 meter boat and a 50"' footer..
If the forecast is foreseing an increase or a decrease of wind..
and also a force 7 wind, right on your nose is much stronger than a nice force 7 following wind..
I was once in the harbour of Corfou in Greece.. and the wind was building up doing a nasty and choopy sea just in front of the opening of the harbour and several boats have been obliged to leave to a more settled place..
