New to having outdrives had shaft drive before, but justwondering what the safe maximum height is that you can run outdrives ( 290's ) at with out exploding the uj's or knackering them, if needed to or wanted to when in known shallow water??
I don't mean flat out or on the plane.
Uj's arnt cheap and I wouldn't want to damage them unnecessarily.
Any thoughts, experience's and factual knowledge welcome.
Cheers.

If you consider that the UJ drives through an angle when you steer on full lock when manouvering, then a similar angle should be fine with it trimmed up in shallow water obviously at idle speed. The exact angle will depend on how your trim gauge is calibrated but up to around half way should work or if the props starts to break the surface which you will know due to lack of propulsion.

Thanks for quick reply spannerman I understand trim gauge should be at -5 when fully down, mine run at -3 so would need to go past beech a couple of clicks as such.
We would be running at 4-5knts on tick over or just above.
So are you saying I could go to say 10 ? Think they are fully up at 40.
And is there anything else to bare in mind that will excelerate ware ?
Cheers.

You are unlikely to run for long periods or at high rpm with the drive trimmed up so you can probably trim it up till it looses good contact with the water or your control starts to suffer and makes it difficult to keep the boat going where you want it to.. Remember the drive is your rudder so if you lift it out the water you will have less directional control..

I have run at 30-35 in shallow water at idle speed without anything bad happening (DP-E).
There is a lot of splashing around though, and the steering is rubbish at high tilt angles.

You can laugh ... but try entering Sparkes Marina on a low spring tide with your outdrives fully down and see what happens! :nonchalance:

Is it not the case that the upper limit is when the trim switch will not trim up any further (the point past which you need to use the 'trailer' switch if you want to raise the drive any further) or am I misunderstanding?

There's a massive dry stack at Premier Swanwick that looks about 15 m high. Ideal for outdrive pop pops.

I suspect Oldgit reckons that is probably the best place for them and I would tend to agree with him !

I'll get my coat !

The system will allow you to trim into the lifting range (above 40) with the button pressed.
Getting into the beach range also needs the button pressed.
