Max, our Bassett Hound, died today

I dont believe this

When a young lad drown in Portland a few weeks ago posters portrayed a couldn't careless attitude over a loss of a human life . Now an elderly dog has died and everyone is sooooo mournful . Why ??? You didn't even know the dog .
Don't get me wrong I have had dogs die and to the owners it is very sad and traumatic but the loss has to be put into perspective .

A very moving account well described and causing tear in eye here too. So sorry for your loss. I know I'd be devastated if something happened to my wee pal.

Re: I dont believe this

I think maybe you're confusing issues here. Without rereading the thread in question I would say this. There was an element of 'if he hadn't nicked the boat he wouldn't have drowned' but I think we all felt sympathy for his family. Just as we are feeling sympathy for the family of Max, who probably never did anyone any harm but brought companionship and delight into the lives of all who knew him.

Know how you feel... Lost my Staffie nearly 13 years ago and still hurts. Got another Staffie straight away who is now 12 1/2 and on his final; legs. Been to the Vet today with him to find out he has a heart murmur, arthritis, lump on his shoulder, ear infection but apart from that looks healthy!! Will miiss him terribly when he goes.... My heart goes out to you - one of the family

Re: I dont believe this

I just think its sad to feel you have to share grief ,which is very real to the owner, on a "Practical Boat Owners forum with people who you nor the dog know .

Grieve by all means but on a Boat Help forum ??? Nah .
Sorry if it sounds cold but surely there are more suitable sites if the need is felt to share grief with strangers .

Re: I dont believe this

I expressed sadness at the loss of life in Portland and said so in the thread. I am also saddened at someone losing their dog as it reminds me of how it feels, but then I am someone who still won't watch Lassie films as they upset me when I was a kid.

I didn't know the kid or the dog but hearing about them makes me sad, if you don't feel the same that's ok but you don't have to criticise others who do.

Re: I dont believe this

I 'm not criticising others I'm merely saying that a Practical Boat Owners forum is not the appropriate place for obituaries . If you disagree sobeit .

Ea I have never had a pet... was allergic to fur as a child..supposedly. You brought Max so brilliantly to life, to exscuse a pun, that it brought a tear to my eye. Perhaps you could take his ashes sailing and give him one final new experience??
Clyst I know the comment is often made that the Brits care more about cruelty to animals than they do to humans, particularly children. Come on though, let yourself go and be moved by the death of an animal, we are all part of the same life cycle. The lad who lost his life after nicking a boat, and the two who lost their lives spraying graffiti on trains.. both deserved a sound caning I reckon, but to lose their lives?? No. Politicians and capts of industry cause much more misery and misfortune. I swore blindly when some kids threw my dinghy in the river, but would not have wished that they had taken it out and drowned either. We have to learn to love the birds of the air, the stones and the rocks and the dogs and cats and the errant wayward kids who may one day have grown up to be fine people and regretted their actions.

Re: I dont believe this

Have to agree with you Clyst. Very sad for the owner but how can total strangers share in such a personal grief.

13 people young and old died in accidents related to the storm yesterday,Lets keep this in perspective.

Re: I dont believe this

disagree with that Nick. Are you suggesting that if you dont agree with the original post you shouldnt put forward another point of view? Kind of stifles things a bit ?

I dont want to continue a row on this thread anyone cares to flame me Pm me or do it elsewhere.

I expect some people are sad about that too.

Re: I dont believe this

Agree with you clyst.

I remember my old dad telling me about the Jack Russell he had. He took it for a walk, which meant walking some way along the road. A lorry or bus went past, the lead went limp then taut. Dad looked back and there was Jack turned into a frisbee. Shame, but he disconnected the lead and collar and dropped the dog over the hedge ( he might have used him as a frisbee but probably not stiff enough at that time) and went home. Still makes you laugh! But there was no state funeral for him or anything and he didn't feel a thing.

I've had some of my own over the years. Had to shoot one for sheep chasing, one was run over by a car, another was put down for attacking the coalman by the throat (I was only 7). Had to take one back to the kennels because the other dog we had wouldn't leave it in peace (blood up the walls, smashed stereo, tv on its side.

Ex-wife gave one away because she was jealous of it (said I thought more of the dog than I did of her ). Cats, there's another whole bunch of funerals I didn't go to. One killed by a lurcher, one pinched by neighbours, one electrocuted, one flattened because he used to sleep on warm tyres after arrival home from journey and was frisbeed on getting back in car and driving off, one shot by mistake, one killed by unknown attacker, one died due to being fed so much crap by well wishers in pub (crisps and chips aren't the staple diet of cats) dad drowned one, supposed to have been two, in the dustbin full of water concave lid on upside down, fortunately in taking the lid off to have a look, one of them came out in Polaris missile style and made his escape even dad's little tid-bit offerings couldn't tempt him back, one kicked by horse, never did find his head. The list goes on but.... the frisbee one is poignant

Not being a pet owner I can't claim to be an expert, but I am not really sure you should be keeping pets.

Re: I dont believe this

I'm very glad I didn't know your dad, he sounds like a real charmer

And I really don't think what you write is appropriate for this thread, probably better told elsewhere (if at all).

John, Really sorry to hear about your dog
Must admit I was in tears reading your post. Had to take my wife's dog to have it put down a few yrs ago, had a tumer problem, a real heart wrencher.
Please pass my sympathy on to your wife, and family.
Regards, Eamonn.
