I know it is not very boaty but today , Max, our Bassett Hound died aged 12years 9 months,
He was the most gentle of dogs you could imagine. A dear friend who guarded us at night and looked after our home during the day.
He loved chicken gravy on his biscuits. Could tell when the fridge was opened from 100 yards. Never, but NEVER sailed (he was a hound you see).
He would chew on my ears. He would run after a stick but NEVER bring it back - on the basis that if I wanted it I would not have thrown it away!!

Max suffered from epilepsy of late and today he had a massive seizure that went on and on. By the time we got him to the vet there was no chance of recovery. To bring him back would have brought significant brain damage with him and everything that that entails. He lay quietly on the vet's table and relaxed as the pre-med was administered. As Max settled down my wife and I asked if there was anyway back - but sadly there was not. The final dose was administered and Max fell quietly into a deep sleep from which he would not recover. Max passed away quietly and comfortably.
It is only hours since his passing but we all miss him terribly already.
Please raise your glasses in fond farewell of Max and wish him an adventurous and fun journey.

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your hound. I'm a practicing vet in Bristol and I was on the other side of the fence today in a case that sounds just the same. An hound that had just fitted to much to bring back. I glad that he went peacefully. Consider a glass duely raised

John, you have my sympathy. Every dog owner will understand your emotions. However many dogs we have in our lifetime it doesn't get any easier.

Here's to Max.

Cheers.

Dont know you or Max but you have all my sympathies, We did the same with a cat under simmilar circumstances, and like wise we also did what was best for our pet and still think so.

John, I know how you feel, I lost my two Springer Spaniels within 6 monhs of each other, 12 months ago. A great hole in my life. I still look for them on a walk.

It's one of the worst things about being a human being: losing an animal (be it dog, cat, horse, or anything) who has been part of the family. The gap will be enormous, but the memories will trot on for ever. Cheers to Max, today.

The final kindness we have to do for our dogs, but never easy. We lost one of ours just over 2 years ago and are now training up a new pup. They cannot be replaced but the fun can start again one day.

i know how you feel our last dog a lurcher passed away some 7 years ago alovely old dog who we loved very much but getting another onevery soon after did somewhat ease the pain we found another lurcher a rescue dog of 5 years and have had him since but we now have to prepare ourselves because he has a growth in his head and not long to live and as said it does not get any easier. good luck and all the best
