I was standing on the staging at David Hillyards ,across the river a man appeared in full business man’s outfit including a brief case he jumped down from the quay onto an Eventide 24 .Sliding back the hatch he flung his brief case in his jacket and tie and dragged out a jib and hanked it on.He was in a rush as it was nearly high water in Littlehampton so he only had about two hours before the ebb set in .There was a goods breeze and the harbour mouthwas its usual tumble but the Eventide now with full sail set bounded out away from the west pier and shot off like a rocket. There was skipper stood atthe helm still in his waistcoat, racing off on a broad reach to the south.

Years ago (before the wet suits shrank too much) we used to sail a dinghy at Bala. There used to be an old chap there who turned up in cord trousers , shirt tie and knitted pull over. He then rigged his wind surfer , kicked off his shoes, adjusted his tie and happily wind surfed across the lake. I was enormously impressed. He never got so much as a splash on his trousers.

My younger bro was quite good at windsurfing, Tencate used to give him boards for trials. Won a few pots.

So, end of a meeting, all packed up to go and he bumped into a friend who had a new board. Mind if I have a go? Of course says friend. Bro was in his slacks and jacket, so friend offers his wetsuit.. Nah, just as I am. So jumped on and set off. Couple of laps and stepped off, dryshod. He did admit to almost dumping it in a gust as he started. Friend was impressed..
