Hi if you were to try to replace an old Volvo Penta engine with a more modern Beta/Nanni/Yanmar, how would you go about making the connection between the two ? I have an older drive leg which I finally have working well, but the engine seems a bit tempermental and non service spares are hard to find (decent manifolds etc). The leg has its own gearbox, and is bolted to the engine via a "bearing carrier" which is like a direct drive gearbox with a shaft straight through it with a cush drive on the engine end and a splined socket at the other. Is there a specialist who makes this sort of thing, adapting bell housings and so on ?
thanks

Your 'bearing carrier' sounds a little unusual, for special fabrications from someone with plenty of experience in the field, I would talk to Lancing Marine.

Thanks, I'll give them a call. The bearing carrier is a Volvo part, Ive seen it in a catalogue diagram, just never come across another one !

The (gasoline) VP engines with outdrives are generally based on car engines ... the AQ130 is the Volvo 144 .... the AQ170 is the Volvo 164.

I have the AQ170 and have considered swapping for a diesel unit ..... I asked a pal who has an auto service about swapping to a Volvo Diesel engine .. and he reckoned it should work. He commented that mating should not be too much of a problem. But if considering a non Volvo Unit - then there could be problems.

So far I have not proceded with it ....

I was under the impression that swapping the petrol engine for a diesel was a bad idea as the additional torque would/could over stress the outdrive. I could of course be completely wrong.
The diesel torque might mean problems plus prop will need re pitching or replacing.
Expence of machining adaptor plate and matching leg splines to damper plate will need to be taken into account as well.
