I'm looking at Mathews Marine Training to do some RYA on the water practical courses. I'd be very interested if anyone can provide feedback on them. I'm looking at them as I believe they have a trawler style, displacement power boat as a training platform.
Thanks in advance!

Very well thought of at Hull marina where they are based. Busy most of the time which says something.

You are correct about the boat type. It's called Bondi Star.

Thanks. That's very helpful. Been around a while, well thought of and busy - can't ask for more. Cheers.

I Did my Day Skippers Theory there last month and very Impressed and helpful.
I have my Practical to do a week Monday so looking forward to that as Hull has Lock gates that I have never done in the past plus the Humber is a busy estuary to train on.

That's very helpful to know. Thanks! Love to get an update from you on the Practical. Are you on their motor cruiser? That's the reason I'm interested in doing the course with them.

I lived in Hull in the 1970’s, no boat then if you don’t count my dinghies so no Humber experience other than the pre-Humber Bridge ferry, but I know the area. Good if potentially challenging conditions make better training in my view, you’ll learn far more when there’s a lot to consider and be a better and safer skipper as a result. The Humber like many E coast rivers is not an easy playground, learning the waters is very satisfying.

I remember the Ferry to new Holland before the bridge was completed.

Yes a challenging river can be fast flowing plenty of sand bars, marine traffic etc etc

How did things go on your practical? I'm looking to book with Mathews soon and any feedback would be fantastic.
TIA

Yes definitely recommend - especially as the Humber can be challenging.
And if you have never used a lock before.
Wrap up is the key as it can get cold as you spend quite some time on the water.

Thanks. I'm currently living full time on a narrowboat so locks, a bit smaller granted, are something I'm familiar with.
Planning on mid summer but can still be chilly on the water.
Great to hear good feedback though.

You will find it fun, canal locks and tidal see locks are quite different, the size and drop/rise can be daunting at first, especially the large ship locks, but at least you can stay on your boat as always manned.

We are based in Hull Marina and see Mathews Marine going out with groups all the time and they look very professional.
