Thinking of running nylon mono down the outer edges of the steps to prevent the halyard from taking a wrap around the fixed steps. Some say it will cause flutter in the wind. Any thoughts please?

The question is have you had halyards wrap around the steps? Do you have internal halyards with concern only re the sail end when sails down? If it is just the sail end of halyard when sail is down then tie off to the side or forward. If external and no problems so far why worry halyards should be reasonably taught.
But if you want a string along outside ends of steps and need it then no I don't think it will flutter. Of course not too difficult to take it off again if it does. ol'will

I have string on the outer edges of my mast steps .no problems.untill string breaks then nearly instant wrap..usually needs replacing every three years
