I have taken the teak deck off a boat and am left with residue of thiokol sealant. Has anyone any idea of some chemical or other method which will remove this residue other than scraping and sanding before redecking. Grateful for any inspiration.

Thikol is a brand name for a range of sealants and adhesive/sealants widely used in the Aviation Industry which is where I have come across it. The commonest form is a chocolate brown coloured stuff and there used to be a remover for it. It was really nasty stuff, and I asked around at work last night - nobody could remember it's name or number, just that they thought it had been withdrawn due to toxicity isssues and that it didn't really work it just made it into a sort of rubbery consistancy which was a little easier to remove. Looks like rub and scrape I'm afraid.

Get as much off as you can with a round edged chisel taking care not to go too deep to hit the GRP.

Then buy a product called release which will help you get the rest of it off.

Spray wait and then peel away the rest of it.

A surprisingly effective tool, with or without the solvents, is a square edged bit of hardwood. Doesn't damage the plastic and really does get the stuff off.
