Masthead led

There are many masthead replacement LED lamps and bulbs on the market. I currently have a, failed, boat lamps three coloured LED in an aqua signal lamp.

What I want is a sealed and reliable masthead light.

What are the committee's recommendations and experiences.

Perhaps PBO might run a comparison long term test of these things?

They may have improved since I splashed out on LED tricolour and anchor light some years ago but mine didn't last. I replaced the tricolour one with a bulb and gave up on the anchor light, it's easier to hang a 10 quid LED all-round lantern from Lidl in the foretriangle and much easier to service.

My Aqua Signal 34 is doing fine after two seasons. It replaced a dead Lopolight unit.

I have a Boat Lamps warm white in my AquaSignal tricolour and it seems to work fine. The green is perhaps a hint on the blue side (same with the bicolour) but it couldn't possibly be mistaken for red or white.

All my Bebi lamps are still going strong, but sadly no longer available due to political instability in Fiji.

This is what I used in my Aqua Signal tricolour bicolour and both colours look fine to me.

I use the cool white version in my anchor,steaming and stern lights.

On my previous boat I had the Lopolight tri/all round white, which after ten years was still working fine, (originally bought Lopolight as the choice of LED was very limited 10 years go).
My current boat has the NASA LED tri/all round white, fitted three years ago, which is still working fine, be interested to see how long it lasts compared to the a Lopolight which is about 4x the price.

I've ordered a boat lamps led replacement tri colour. I'll see how we get on.

One good thing about boatlamps product's is they seem to be suppressed so don't cause radio hiss. Non BOATY LEDs seem to cause more of a problem.

I have a boat lamps tri colour led in my aqua signal tri-light for quite a few years now with no problem and no noticeable noise on the vhf.

I've bought a replacement led cabin light and a deck spot steaming light cheaply from ebay and both cause marked hiss on the vhf. Something to consider if buying led type lights.

I went with Boatlamps for my LED mooring light and it has been fine for 4 years. It is a dusk to dawn lamp with a day/night sensor. The only snag was the rigger who, forgetting that I had told him it was a sensor version, left it in the saloon with a note saying it was faulty. He came back a few days later and literally sprang up the mast whilst his mate took care of a safety line, and had it installed in less than 5 mins.

I didn’t know whether EMF was relevant or not when LED’s are close to a VHF antenna but Boatlamps website at the time suggested it was so I went with them and haven’t had any problems. Good company and service.
