The so called Mastervolt Whiper 4000 generator on my boat which refused to start turned out to be a Paguro 4000, but I found the spares list under Westerbeke 4.5 bcdt. All generic options actually driven by a Farymann 18D Diesel engine.
So what - well price and availability of spare parts is what. Mastervolt had wanted about £400 for a simple blister panel for the remote control box - I found this for £17 from Advance Yacht Services, albeit labelled Paguro. They also suggested the starting problem was likely to be a corroded exhaust valve - spot on, it had lost about 3/4 of the seat material due to exposure to damp salty exhaust after shutdown.
Unfortunately all that could offered from Paguro was a complete top overhaul kit, so after some googling I found the specific parts for the Farymann engine, and with these part numbers I soon found a diesel firm in Surrey with the parts I specifically required, rather than a kit with many unnecessary parts, in stock, and for just £40.
Message here is do not assume your specific piece of equipment is what it says it is. In my case the cross reference to find the generator's true identity saved me almost £600 on the spare parts needed.
