Leaving the boat for short periods I switch off the shore-power which disconnects the Mastervolt battery charger to all the 'sealed' batteries.

Later this year I intend leaving the boat for up-to three or four months at a time.

Having once had an unexpected leak I would like to leave the battery charger connected so that there is always power to the bilge pumps should they switch on.

Will that create problems? - will the Mastervolt charger just keep up a trickle charge when required and switch off when it not required?

- I do not want to 'cook' the battery banks.

Thanks

Depends on the charger.

Masterlink BTM-III battery monitor provides an accurate indication of the current, amperage, remaining time and remaining capacity of battery bank 1, and the current and estimated capacity of battery banks 2 and 3. The built-in microprocessor calculates the remaining capacity and stores historic data.

The above is the controller

If it's a half decent quality charger, and I suspect it is, I would not be too worried about leaving it on 24/7. However you could consider bringing it on say an hour every day by using a simple "plug top" timer. Although there is always the argument that electronics left on continuously tend to be more reliable ! Many years ago I had to lay my car up for three months at a time. I used a timer to simply bring a very basic non intelligent charger on once a week for a couple of hours. Battery was always fine on my return. Simple low tech !

You dont say which Mastervolt charger you have!

Assuming your charger is an automatic multistage charger which reduces its output to a "float" voltage once the batteries are fully charged there will be no problem.

AFAIK all the Mastervolt chargers in fact do this.

No, the above is the battery monitor, it doesn't control anything. You need to identify the model of the actual charger.
