Mast wedges

My East Anglian has a keel stepped spruce mast. The mast had been out for some time and when I rerigged I forgot about these wedges that were in a small dish on my bedside table???
That explains why my mast takes to vibrating sometimes. Anyway, should the wedges be inserted from under the deckhead up or down from the top?
Seems a daft question but I vaguely remember the wedges being inserted from under the deckhead upward. But surely with even a small amouint of mast movement the wedges would fall out, wouldn't they?
Any ideas?

Mine have pointed down for the past 73 years, and the mast has come to no harm.

Yes, they would fall out, so most folk put them in from above to stop this happening.

They are probably T shaped to sit on the deck without falling through.

Yes, from the top down. But I am not sure what substance to make them from. I have an odd set... some rubber, some teak and the rest soft pine. I wonder which is best.

I've got four and they all look like teak - wedges that is!
