The Minstrel has wooden spars on the high peaked gaff/gunter

they have been in the previous owners garage for fifteen years

I feel I should put a coat of somethiing on them before they go up

Any suggestions?

Dylan

Your choice is "traditional" varnish - which means lot of coats and keeping it pristine, or using a microporous stain such as Sikkens Novatec/Novatop, or perhaps the new single pot International Woodskin. Advantage of microporous is that it is cheap, easy to apply, lasts well, but does not give a gloss finish. I changed to it over 10 years ago after 20 years of trying to keep varnish on my big Douglas Fir mast. Would not go back.

Ryland

Any good quality one pack polyurethane varnish.
It's hard enough to withstand the knocks but not easy to touch up.

My favourite is made by Rylard.

Have you bought the Minstrel yet?

+1 for a good single pack polyurethane varnish

I always use International Yachtpaint's ... what ever the current name is ... it keeps changing

Don't apply too thickly esp in the luff groove .

Make sure its truly dry and hardened before use whatever you use.

it is in the garden

brought it home Tuesday

been editing films ever since

sat in it today and had a think about what it needs

I think we're due for a proper video tour aren't we Dylan?

I was thinking you have been remarkably quiet with your new toy. Did the tow home go ok?

I have used the sikkens type on a 58 ft mast as it was such a job to remove it and it was really good and long lasting but as said before it dulls off to a yukky brown colour.
However I now have downsized to a 17 ft couta boat . This is much more of a marina "Queen" and has a 20 foot mast which I have just finished making.
I have used five coats of Feast Watson traditional varnish ( turps washup).
It looks fantastic.
Mind you I can remove to with a little help from one other person. So, revarnishing is done at home at the end of the season. Trouble is , in Australia, Finding the end of the season involves picking a date out of the calander! It never gets too cold to go sailing.
Best of luck with your choice.

sikkens and minstrel

the slug had sikkens slathered all over it

might just as well have painted everything with mat brown paint as far s I could see

did not like the look or feel of it

so sounds like one pot poly for the masts
as for the Minstrel

brought it home Tuesday - towed a treat behind the rented van

could not get it into the garden using the long wheel base transit

do it sat on the road tuesday night and I used my neighbours nissan 4wd to get it into the garden

it has sat unoouched on its trailer ever since as I had the PBO col regs films to work on

yesterday afternoon I removed all the surplus sails and cushions to the garage and jill and I sat below for the first time to have a think

It does feel preety spacious compared to the slug

I will make a film as soon as the sun shines

you are correct

I brought the boat home on Tuesday

although I could get the eboat - 22 foot and 8 foot wide - up the drive using the old sierra I could not get it up the drive using the renatl van

so it sat on the road outside until I got my neighbour to come and bring it into the garden

I have been editing the films about col regs for PBO so I have not touched it

last night jill and I shifted all the sails and surplus cusions out and into the garage

we sat in it for the first time

will try to film something for next week

Simple polyurethane varnish.
OK you'll need to flat it down and dob a couple of coats on each year, but it'll look really nice and the attention will keep the spars in good nick.

Choose one of the polyurethanes with good UV resistance, unless you keep your mast indoors!
The international one-pot poly is OK, most of the marine makes have their fans.

Coelan or, as its called here in Sweden, Xtreem coat.. just been doing my coachroof with stuff. Polyurethane and suppose to last for years..
I hope 'they' are right;)
