Hello

We're going to take our yacht through the French canals back to France this summer. Entering the Rhone and exiting at Le Havre we think. We want to have the mast transported for us. Do we just turn up and sort it out or should we make some arrangements both ends in advance? Can anybody recommend a good company? Thanks very much!

We're doing exactly the same, in fact Him Outdoors is leaving Port St Louis today, having delivered the boat there from Barcelona, to come home for a while (by TGV).

Sam made complex arrangements for mast transportation to Calais with a UK company, but when he arrived he found a German company which will do it for just about half the price. I'm afraid I don't have the name and he won't be home until tomorrow evening. But broadly you may be best just turning up and asking around.

Of course we don't know yet if our mast will actually turn up at the other end /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Delivered them safe and sound to Arles train station, wondering about their night in Marseille though!!! :-) Hope all goes well. Look forward to hearing about the voyage of Kalessin through the canals.

They were extremely pleased about the mast transportation, although we don't know the company, it has been around for several years and we have not heard any adverse comments. Basically, if one doesn't need a mast transported then it's not someting one gets involved with. Hence not being au fait with the company's name.
It will all become apparent.

Here is Stephan Reists Website. We used him to arrange transport and mast preparation in Le Harve a few years ago. I can't remember the transport co, but I think the guy's name was Wolfgang. Stephan will be able to help at both ends of the journey and speaks good English. http://www.cnhm.fr/

Can't help with mast transportation , but we have just come down the River Rhone into Port Saint Louis. Slowly travelling through canals and rivers for the past year,- entered at Le Havre, so if you need any info on passage up, perhaps can help.
Different to coastal sailing, but interesting opportunity to see areas of France. Arles still has massive roman amphitheatre, Avignon is also equally interesting and both pleasant day's wanders.
hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

The company is Yacht Graf - www.masttransporte.de, Telephone 0049 15773491227. Speak to Wolfgang. They are efficient and reasonably priced. Stephan Reiset can be contacted by mobile on 0033 619 464623. I used Yacht Graf and Stephan this year to return to the UK -both very helpful.

That is correct, but it does NOT involve Stephan. There are others who do not use a suitable crane. Stephan hired the right type and was very professional.

Just got back from Port St Louis and picking up on post re mast transport. As already posted, the outfit we are now dealing with is Yachtservice Wolfgang Graf at Steiner Weg 8A 24235 Laboe.

I met the guy at Navy Service Port St Louis just after our mast had been taken out. He seemed to be very switched on and has a neat little outfit with a long trailer and a van in which he carries all his stuff and uses as a caravan on the delivery trips. There is a no messing price list covering rates for masts and booms He paced out our mast and came up with a price of €650 for delivery to Calais. This against a "ball park" quote from another organisation of £750 Sterling. Navy Service think highly of him. He collects about every three weeks from there.
I would say he is well worth a call.

Couldn't have done it without you! Not just transport, but foraging a couple of fender boards too! Marseille was excellent, a lovely day and bustling around the Vieux Port, although bouillabaisse ( I'm sure that's wrong) prices have gone ballistic. Using TGV and Eurostar, Marseille to St Pancras in less than six hours. A lot less stress than flying. Thanks again guys.
