I usually climb a rope up the mast but thought it would be more comfortable if I had a pair of steps and a clip in point near the top. There seem to be two types on offer what looks like folding cast stainless rings or a serrated folding bar type. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these steps. I see the cast one's have two 8mm mounting holes. 8mm seems a bit of a large thread to be putting in the mast.

I have folding glass filled nylon mast steps bolted on with M6 cap head set screws tapped into the wall of the mast

I have two pairs of folding cast aluminium ones up there. Can't recall if the machine screws are M6 or M8 but when I'm standing on them I'd like to hope they're M8.
