Hi Folks,

as you can see from this photo...
Maststep.jpg

the casing in the mast step holding the meansheet lead has chipped. Short of replacing the whole of the mast step - what would you suggest could be done?

Nothing. That low sleeve adds virtually no strength to the structure and can be considered to be decorative. It has broken because it has no strength, and the block pin, being a little on the long side, has levered against it. Presumably the end of this pin has an enlarged head that lies beneath the mast step. There is plenty of strength here to continue holding it.

It's not really a very good design, is it? As Vyv says it's the leverage on the pin (I wonder why it's so long?) that has caused the upstanding part to fracture. It looks as though the mast step would have to be unbolted to fully inspect or change these pins.

Depends whether you want to take it apart. Replacing the csk bolt/screw with eye nut/bolt would be one option. Don't like the rust stain much, does the whole thing need re-bedding anyway?
You could shorten the pin to reduce the leverage on it. Are we up for doing it it situ? Wedge the pin in place and drill with a new drill bit? Take care.
Just put some insulting tape over it!
Who made this? Give em hell!
Cheers,

Hi Tiggertoo,

maybe if appearance is an issue, pride in boat, (resale etc) I would take off the blocks, think they just unscrew leaving the nuts below the casting. Then remove most of the collar with small grinder until a clean surface is visible.mask off and apply matt black paint.Might wait until haulout and take off the casting and give it a good going over?thats all I can think of just now, but I have been celebrating! Happy St Patrick's Day! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
