I bought a bottle of Blakes Mast Care which is ancient but like some 'snake oil'. Each year when the mast is dropped I clean it with the Mast Care and it puts a nice coating which seems to help to keep the mast clean during the season and the mast seems to stay in the same condition. The bottle was about half a litre and has lasted for years. I don't know when I started it but it's more like 20 years so I am pretty happy.

Rigger's inspection report came in the post last night.

One of the recommendations is "wash, polish the mast and apply one coat of Mast Protect" (I assume they mean this stuff: http://www.outdoorexperten.se/p-7879-watski-mast-protect-500ml.aspx or this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hempel-Al...169182?hash=item3a91ad7cde:g:CBoAAOxyu1BTkwpR)

Has anyone got any idea whether this is just a fancy bottle of snake oil?

Haven't tried any of those, but treat my mast every year (after wash, rinse and dry) with liquid paraffin/mineral oil.
This is the recommendation of sparsmaker Seldén. Very cheap, 1 litre lasts many years.

Strangely I find WD40 (of which I am generally not a huge fan) perfect. It does seem to penetrate the aluminum and improves the finish. It seems to last a couple of months before another coat restores the finish, but it is really easy to apply and not costly.

Does it repel bird droppings? The only other thing my mast would've needed protecting from was the grubby trestles the boatyard put it on, which were full of black tarry paint that got all over it (grumble). I doubt your magic goop would've saved it from that.

Scrubbed mine with water & fairy and that got it clean (apart from the black tarry paint marks).

I think eucalyptus oil is good for getting tar off.
