Mast profile

I need a new gooseneck fitting. The maunufacturers have asked for a profile of the aft section of my mast. How the $@&# do I do that. I have spent the afternoon fiddling with bits of card and a pencil. Am none the wiser. Please HELP!

For a start.. do you know the mast manufacturer?

This will reduce the number of options then available. From that you might find find lines engraved vertically - Selden have either one or two fine vertical lines on some of their sections - and depending on whether this is towards the front or the centre will also narrow down the make.

Then you will find a front to back measurement and a side to side measurement.. this will narrow it down to just a couple of sections from a manufacturer. Then the luff grove width and profile.

Start with the manufacturer perhaps... and fore/aft and side/side dimensions.

Should be able to narrow down to a manufacturer profile and then find exact drawings from the manufacturer.

Thanks for that the maker of the mast is proctor... the boom is rough alu. looks like original 1979! I'd say the gooseneck s original because it looks like itsbeen manipulated to fit the mast profile

I was hoping someone had a clever trick for a simple transcription to the cornflakes box suggested above..

BTW the cornflakes box is half full.. I'll get into serious trouble if I take the box!!!

As suggested use a profile gauge. Any half decent tool store will hav ethem

I guess the mast is not down? If it was then just draw around the base of the section as this will be the same, Mast foot could be in the way but just a thought! The proctor section profile needs to be a fair way around the section as the new gooseneck will wrap around possibly half way, not sure who you are using to make it, Sailspar? As has been mentioned a cardboard pattern just offered up to the section and cut till right, needs to be a good fit. Cut the shape our roughly then just little bits until right. Hope this helps.

Use a thin auminium (or other soft material) rod then transfer (pencil) the shape to a piece of card or ask the gooseneck supplier how to do it.

Taking a profile with card.. I would probably cut a piece of cardboard to fit approximately 1cm gap all around.. then stick sticky tape, layer on layer to fill the gap.. lots of short diagonal pieces will make up the space... Go all the way round then cut a single cut from outside to the mast to be able to remove it. Then a quick scan (with a ruler included) and you could email it!

But this is supposed to be a forum for practical boat owners. Messing about is what we do.

Even more pertinent is to see whether your Proctor mast has a label on the front of it with a serial no shown; as I recall the section and weight and serial number are all there and as Selden are now the takeover firm they will be able to tell you the section A,B,C, etc. otherwise as mentioned the profile tool should do it.

Polymorph from Maplin. Heat it up in hot water and mould it to the mast. Send it to them. I use it for such things from time to time.
