When inspecting the mast on my beloved but ancient hurley 20 i discovered that a cleat anchorage has pulled out of the mast and a 1cm. hairline crack is radiating from the hole.
Will it be ok to drill tiny hole to stop its spread and leave it?
Can it be repaired by welding?
Do i need a new mast? (how much would that cost?)
The old girl never goes out in more than a breeze by the way

Wouldn't make the hole too small, 1/8" will do. After that just keep an eye on it. Would think that it was the cleat that caused the crack, so it shouldn't get any worse.

The pivot point on my tabernacle mounted mast developed a compression bulge after the step at the base of the mast deteriorated. I had a stainless plate made up for each side of the mast to cover the pivot-point hole and bulge and thus strengthen the mast at this point (and replaced the step wedge)
