I would welcome your advice on how best to remove black marks at the top of my aluminium mast caused by a halyard slapping against it, or is it best to leave well alone due to the the protective oxy film that occurs naturally on the aluminium surface?
If this layer is say hand sanded or polished off using a proprietry abrasive cleaner of some kind, whilst removing the black marking down to "new" shiney metal, will I also cause irreperable damage to the surface finish or will it reform and quickly oxydise again?

Your thoughts and ideas will be most appreciated

Thanks

What have you tried to remove it with so far, so we know what doesn't work?

Hi bitbaltic, thanks for your interest. As yet I have'nt tried anything in case I spoilt the surface finish, so nothing to exclude at the moment. Look forward to your further response.

Nothing to suggest other than if you haven't tried anything at all I'd try a mild abrasive like jif to start with. If there's anything more aggressive needed I'd talk to a rigger as I think the finish is likely a laquer in most masts not the natural oxide coating. I'm finding it hard to think what a halyard flapping around would do that would be very damaging. It's not some sort of friction mark instead? If so I think I would definitely talk to a rigger as something else might be wrong.
