To cheer you up while in the grip of the storm....
Our club had the annual Rottnest race last weekend.
The race itself was a bit slow with no wind in the middle but the barbecue party was excellent and we left about 8PM for a night sail home which was glorious.
23 sail boats and about 35 Mobos attended and about 220 people for the barbecue on the beach.

Olewill went on High Noon a 27ft Spacesailer with captain jim and photos by Dave Russell.

This is True Blue a 40 ft Farr of Admirals Cup team of 1989 fame. Just to show mast lowering is not just for little boats. He has to disconnect rod rigging for lowering the mast.
Note the mast is keel stepped and has a hinge in the mast about 60cms above the deck.

The barbecue venue before the crowd arrived that is Fremantle in the background. I hope this is not too boring for the forum olewill

Anyone thought of a telescopic mast?

Yes, there was a superyacht built at Pendennis a couple of years ago that had a telescopic top to the mast. I think it was to get under a bridge in New York.

yer tis... MITseaAH

Its amazing how ingenious people can be if theres something stopping them going sailing. I will be making a set of sheerlegs to raise and lower the mast on my 25 footer soon. That looks scary enough.I cant imagine doing it on a 40 ftr /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The weathers very similar here at the moment .We were having a bbq this afternoon but the patio chairs were last seen heading into the next county /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

High Brian yes Rottnest is still much the same. There are still too many Quoka (walabies). The rental houses have been improved a lot but costs have run away. It is now $12.50 per day per person just to land on the island. They have restored the old WW2 army built railway and there are lots more resturaunts. All a bit overated to me.
But the waters still remain georgeous.

Good to hear it still there and not been towed north by some developer or eaten bare of anything green by the Quokas. I love the history about the islands name: first named Rat-nest because the explorers thought the Quokas were huge rats, must have the rum ration I think. Later renamed Rottnest thank god.

I can recall some very interesting trips back to Freo after the Doctor set in with a little extra, what a way to end a perfect weekend.

But as you say the waters are gorgeous.

Avagoodweekend......
