Anyone know of a good option for a mast boot. I used to have a neoprene one from Oz, on the old boat that was flexible and 100% water proof, only I can't seem to source one here.
I used thick plastic (like you put down when painting) cut to shape and gaffertaped on at the top, down the side 'seam' and half way down for good luck then tied on at the bottom in the groove that seems designed for the job.
To cover the ugliness, I used a blue canvas mastboot made by the previous owner.
I also had one in neoprene that was totaly waterproof.I made it from an old wetsuit leg and attached it with a few turns of shockcord.Neoprene is so effective it would be worth buying a cheap wetsuit just for making one mast boot.
Sailspar made one in neoprene for me about 8 years ago for about £30. I wasn't expecting neoprene, but it lasted well. I think that if I needed another, I'd look for wetsuit kit materials and make my own. Sailspar were in Brightlingsea, but I think they've moved. My present one is glued up from inflatable boat material, (hypalon? ), and that's OK too. Polymarine could supply those materials.
Why buy a wet suit, or wet suit kit, when you could buy the material by the metre? A google search ought to bring something up. Or try www.pointnorth.co.uk, who do all sorts of different materials. Not sure, but 'neoprene coated nylon' sounds promising. If you phone Pointnorth and ask them nicely, they will send you a sample. At £9.95 a metre it should be cheaper than buying a wetsuit.
FWIW, I did one to replace a nice dip-moulded (I think) boot a few years ago. In my hometown, ppl are renowned for being thrifty- more $$ to buy sails and crew and stuff. We made the new gaiter from an old inner-tube for a boatowner when he lived out here, who has since found fame in the news at a certain prestigious class-association regatta. We stuck the gaiter ends together with industrial tyre-vulcanising glue (about 5 GBP for 1/2 litre) and the top and bottom we cable-tied in place. The sunbrela (sp?) cover we reused- I guess the whole job took an hour and earned us maybe as much as 2 Windhoek draughts from the owner!
