masking tape removal ...

many thanks everyone for the tips , I will try some of the suggestions . the tape itself came off ,with difficulty , but its the glue thats still on the boat and it is very sticky !
ps. cant get to B&Q , I,m in Greece .......

Once again 3M Adhesive Cleaner.
Bear in mind I am a pro varnisher so maybe have more experience.

You know story,tape come off but left the glue..
Cheap womens "nail polish remover" from Tesco done the job ,no prob.
But make sure you remove it,and do not leave it on hull, might stain hull,,,,

Probabaly acetone... I remember my mother buying it in small bottles for the same purpose. Always makes me smile when I read how toxic it's supposed to be..

This is the stuff that I used (second one down)........at £2.30 a roll it's a lot cheaper than buying the cheap masking tape + all of the remedies to remove it later
I left mine on for 1 week between coats and it peeled off without any problem.....

I economised on the masking tape I used to put new stripes on Twocats over the winter, NEVER AGAIN!!!
It came off ok, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that the damn paint had 'bled' into the adhesive so I ended up with furry edges to the stripes.

All that trouble I had to go to getting rid of the raggedy edges could have been saved with just a couple of quid more on better tape.

Still, live and learn.

Here's another vote for lighter fluid. Yes you can buy 'proper' stuff that costs money but if you have some lighter fluid on board then this is free and works really well. Also I wouldn't use Acetone on coloured gelcoat surfaces but it should be OK for white.

May be petrol, but isn't refined even more and no additives ?

I'm sure it is, but for dissolving glue I wouldn't expect the level of refinement or additives to make much difference. I've used neat petrol for this purpose when I've had the same problem without difficulty.

A third vote for methylated sprits (meths).

Cheap, easily available, effective on any sticky stuff and not as aggressive on the gelcoat or paintwork as acetone. Acetone is such a good solvent it literally dissolves or softens anything plastic or paint - which isn't what you want.

Cellulose thinners would also work, just as well as acetone, but I wouldn't recommend it for the same reason - it's too good a solvent.

I found petrol worked really well. 2 stroke fuel in fact!
Obviously make sure it does not take the paint off, but it worked for me, when I'd left masking tape for a week with international deck paint.
The label and sticky stuff removers are often great, but I used what was on hand.
Washing down straight after with fairy liquid got rid of the smell and oil.

I expect masking tapes vary, meths did not touch this stuff!

Have you tried WD40? You can get it in Greece and it removes lots of sticky stuff.

I tried everything aforementioned and it wuz rubbish. A year in the water and it will rub off easily.
