If applying primer coat and anti foul coats a week apart
Do I leave the masking tape on throughout , until the antifoul has dried ?
Or is it best to remove the tape while the paint is still wet , requiring fresh masking for each coat ?

Agree with the others but make sure you buy decent tape. Blue 3M the best IMO as it’s stretchy so goes round curves, leaves a clean line and will come off easily after a week.

I believe so. It works for me.

If the paint has dried the tape coming off can break off little chips of paint, losing the clean line you were trying to create.

If the masking tape is left on too long (some are better than others, but none lasts very long) it becomes very difficult to remove - the tape doesn't peel off in one length but tears into tiny slivers, and leaves a sticky residue behind.

In my view cheap masking tape is a false economy, however long you're leaving it on.

Putting tape on multiple times is time consuming and arm aching, but you pay good money for that sort of thing in a gym! ;)

I slightly disagree. I think blue 3M is fine for a week and if you take it off immediately after the last coat and you’ve carefully sanded up to the tape it won’t flake.

Dont use masking tape when it gets wet and sticks its a b***** to get of once it has stuck.

We use a fine line tape its a yellow plastic tape , not as soft as pvc it will take a shape but it wont stick to the paint line or the hull.

take the fine line off after the last coat.

Its not quite a simple as saying the Blue 3M as there's loads of different ones. Some for getting a clean edge and some for getting rounds curvy shapes. I had great success with 3434, several coats of varnish over several days, but I was in a tent. Outside, this time of year, I wouldn't trust it for a week.

I already applied the green frog tape. It seems like a good product. The weather deteriorated and prevented painting last weekend.
I will try peeling part of it to see if it comes of cleanly before I start painting.

nor would I. I had some older blue tape I used last summer. Big mistake. It was a bastard to take off. Whereas the new unwrapped tape from the same source was excellent and peeled away easily.

I use the blue masking tape from toolstation, about £2.50 a role and excellent, supposedly guaranteed to be ok for 14 days left on... but personally I paint and once antifoul dry to light touch I remove. Last Saturday I raised my antifoul level up on boot top so much tape used!!
