Mary Rose museum opens in Portsmouth at cost of £35m

I sailed past with my parents as they lifted the wreck and saw/heard the movement on the cradle.
Purely by chance we heard Margaret Rule talking to Niton radio and then live on Radio Solent. It was all quit exciting for a young person..... The date of lifting doesn't ring true though - I'm sure it would have been in the 70's, not 1982?

It was 1982 I have a clear memory of flying to Greece on the day it was lifted.

....on the question of there being better things to spend the money on, probably there are but unlikely it would be, lets just see if this new home shows her of well, I must admit when I saw her last time it was hard to distinguish her from a pile of rotting wood.

I can't wait to visit the new museum and see how they have spent the Heritage Lottery Funding. I'll leave it until after the summer rush as I am not very good with crowds of people.

I had a prevew trip round the new musuem a couple of weeks ago. It is an interesting building and well laid out. I think they have done a good job of bringing the ship to life and explaining what ship life was like in those days.

As museums go its a good one. But it is not as interactive as it could be.

IIRC it took us 1h 15m to walk round so I am not sure how I would feel if I had paid £72 for the ticket.

As part of a thre ships ticket with Victory and Warrior it would make a full day out but on its own its not more than a short morning or afternoon.

Oh, the kids that are doing Tudors at school found it helpful, so it might get more school trips than before.

£72 for a family ticket- that is outrageous! No I won't be visiting, that is obscene pricing no matter what the subject matter- actually makes me bl...y angry if as you say its approx a 1h 15m walk round. What are these people on???

To be clear, I only quoted the ticket price that the YBW website is quoting. My trip was provided foc by Salesforce.com a supplier to the venue so I had nothing to complain about.

I've been to see the Mary Rose.
Personally I thought there were better things the money could be spent on.

+1, It has always amazed me at the amount of money lavished on it since it was lifted.

As another poster said, looked like a pile of rotting wood.

It could have been replicated in resin and I would have been none the wiser.

That makes quite a difference and I would say is exceptional value for money.

I have just had a look at their site http://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/tickets/
a family ticket to visit the Mary Rose attraction ONLY is £42.30 on line. It is a one year pass, it says.

So my blood pressure has come down a little, but lets be honest what the hell is this one year ticket all about? How many people will return and use it?

And I still think the price is pushing it for just over one hour of 'entertainment'.

Save your money and go and see the Vasa in Stockholm.
+1 as they say here abouts... If you haven't been you will be amazed there are many images on http://www.vasamuseet.se

With ships like the vasa I really think the money spent preserving and displayimg the Mary Rose was wasted. Yes it is an interesting discovery and there are many artefacts but the actual hull or what remains is very much only a small part of the boat. But that is of course my humble opinion.

Entry £13.00 for Adult children under 18 free, and you can spend a good three hours there.

Plus the cost of getting to Sweden, compared to Portsmouth!
