Marriage saver bluetooth headset alternatives?

As promised I am reporting back on the V6 Bluetooth intercoms. In essence brilliant. No wind noise. Easy conversation without press to talk and fully duplex. Thought I'd dropped mine overboard and wife was v upset as they had been working so well. Luckily found it so all is well. So, highly recommended

Just one more complication. Anchoring and docking should be neither stressful nor complicated. For heavens sake, we singlehanders do this all the time with no help. The difference is that singlehanders plan every move, while many with crew assume the crew will figure out what the skipper wants through clairvoyance. Either take the time to explain yourself well, or do the job yourself.
* Plan before anchoring or approaching a dock. There should be no surprises and very little to talk about and nothing worth yelling about.
* Hand signals are better. More concise.
* Repeat that a loud voice does not equal anger. Never use a loud voice for anger, only for background noise or range. Words to live by.

Personally, I find the name "marriage saver" offensive.

I do have to agree with Thinwater, though not quite sure why he finds the words 'marriage saver' offensive.

We have anchored, also entered marinas for fuel and we have managed this together for decades. Its not difficult. In fact its so easy I often manage to come along side single handed and also anchor alone. As Thinwater says its all about planning.

Having said that I've never come alongside singlehanded, or as a couple, in a 50' yacht with no bow thruster, in a tide and a cross wind - so possibly my experiences are limited. But if I could not handle it single handed I would not own it - as basically I could not use it.
 
I would be interested in buying your Marriage savers, I just lost one overboard this weekend- so need to replace them. How much. Shipping to Los Angeles.

Dear Thinwater

I am sorry if you find the name "marriage saver" offensive. It is not a term I came up with. It is the trade name of the product as sold here

With regards for the need to talk when docking, I wonder where you sail. Certainly anchoring "stern-to" in the mediterranean laying out the anchor, in a cross wind, with no-one on the shore to take your lines is a challenge for me, and I suspect for most people. I would not attempt this in my 49ft boat singlehanded.

Med mooring bow or stern in seems to be a uniquely Med technique that could be satisfactorily exported to many parts of the world as it is a very efficient way of using limited space, though better suited to places with minimal tides. Those of us outside the Med, in general, simply do not have exposure to the practice and it does not enter our consciousness. Forgive me therefore for appearing critical - I was simply ignorant. But for simply coming alongside or anchoring (which is the limit of our needs for 'stopping') wireless communication is a bit of overkill.

Now - for masthead work - it does not matter how well you plan - when you get up there the task invariably needs different equipment which always needs complex descriptions (to distinguish it from another tool that looks identical but would be useless) - now I can see the benefit of wireless communications :)

For taking a line ashore wireless communication also works well - as I discovered last week. No shouting from 75 yards/metres away. Just a gentle murmer to the boss

Hand signals are an important back up, but on our boat we have found voice communication between the helm and the bow person to be better.

The person at the bow has a better view, while the person at the helm has control of the boat but also access to radar, depth, charts etc. Hand signals can only convey simple instructions, whereas voice communication is more versatile, allowing discussion like:

Can you see the swimmer behind the blue boat?
What is the distance to the Ketch?
It is still 14m deep, so shall we go further in?
Etc etc.

Of course voice communication is not essential, but considering the relative low cost (in boat dollars) the improvement in convenience and safety is worth considering especially where two or more crew are experienced and can contribute to the discussion of where, and how to anchor.

Be careful. Theses are in fact for a motorcycle helmet. You cannot simply use an earpiece from a mobile phone. You`d need to by the mono aural earpiece too.
I know because this is the mistake I made. Better to from Amazon ones supplied with the mono aural earpiece

I got mine, the same as tudorsailor. direct from china through Aliexpress.

Can't remember how mush I paid but quite happy
 
Tudor, I'm a half step ahead of you. I'd already contacted the supplier telling them this was not quite what I was looking for but they came back with an answer with 10m range including the mono aural ear piece. I'd said that was no use either, I'm asking for 200m range thinking that might actually good for 100m - I am still waiting for an update. Its closing time in China around now - so I'm not expecting anything till tomorrow.

But because I've never needed such modern devices I'm not prepared to pay such lavish prices. To me its nice, but not essential.

The V6-1200 has an apparent 1200m range! They are "only" £50 each on Amazon

But we often get this - we simply have to google the product and find someone who will ship to Australia. I'd be a bit suspicious of the 1200m - but it must surely be good for 200m!

I also see that at my location.

Maybe it because to a lot of companies the the southern hemisphere does not exist.
