According to locals, his first point of arrival was shedloads of different places from florida to Colombia. And if he hadn't of been caught playing hide the sausage with the Govenor of La Gomeras wife, would he have been the first there?True, but Columbus did, and still got there - even if it wasn't the there he was looking for

I had a sextant for several years, plastic, but decent plastic. I gave it away eventually; it wasn't a lot of use anywhere anyone with sense would take a Snapdragon.
If I were to do a transat, that's what GPS is for. If the GPS fails, I'll carry on the way Columbus did it - head west until I sight land. At least I'd be able to ask someone where I was
You could end up finding the wrong continent - just like Columbus!
