I have a Rutland 913 and various solar panels connected to a Marlec HRDX regulator to feed my hungry batteries.

I recently fitted ammeters from the 913 and from the solar panels to the HRDX, so I can see what is going into the HRDX. I can also see what is coming out of the HRDX from the inbuilt output ammeter. The results are a bit disappointing, because I can see that the HRDX only outputs about 60-70% of what is apparently going into it. This is the case even when the batteries are at low charge, so I don't think that it is because the HRDX is limiting the output current to prevent overcharging.

So what is going on?

Ric,
I have always found Marlec's responses to technical queries highly competent. (Unusually competent compared to many in the marine industry!). I suggest you tackle them and let us know what they say.

I have the same kit, so would be very interested if there is an issue.

Cheers
Bob

No way, if the regulator was somehow soaking up all that energy, it would be very hot/smoking/on fire. Is there another explanation? I agree ask Marlec.. and check your calculations? Jerry

I could envisage this being quite a tricky measurement exercise to compare like with like. For example the output from the Rutland is a very crudely rectified pulsing version of DC and depending on the type of ammeter used compared to the HRDX meter it is not hard to see differing readings. Not sure about the solar panel output and input currents.
I also have a 913/HRDX with an 80W solar panel and the output currents to my batteries are very, very close to the rated panel outputs so I do not think I am losing anything at the regulator on solar power.
I am very interested what Marlec have to say about this and I will watch this post closely. I also have found them extremely professional and helpful on a number of occasions.

I've had a 913 up the mizzen and connected to hrdx , added 4 solar panels 38 watts each and the hrdx copes just fine , solar panels seldom reach peak output any way.

Never had cause to be disappointed with the wind generator or the hrdx controller , it is maybe now old technology as the 914 needs a different charge controller , which is why I resisted replacing the 10 year old 913 before leaving the uk.

Call marlec , as said before , very helpful

Also interested in the answer. Maybe the hrdx display is reading incorrectly so you could use one ammeter on wind in and the other on hrdx out (with solar disconnected) and then disconnect wind and check solar only.
