I think it is a subject discussed a lot whether the chart plotter should go in the cockpit or at the Nav Table. If I am honest I think it is needed in both locations, the Nav table to plan/check routes with paper charts and in the cockpit so the course can be kept to.

Am I the only one who thinks a mini repeater (the sort of standard 4" square size) would be an ideal addition to an electronics companies range? Therefore the plotter can go at the Nav table but you can still see the course and the waters immediately around you on the mini repeater in the cockpit....

This means the plotter stays below in the dry and there is no massive display in the cockpit. What do you guys think?

(And if anyone knows of such an instrument please let me know!!)

Wouldn't make any sense for me, because I don't "plan/check routes" on a plotter at all, so have no need of one down below.

Maybe someone would find it useful, but I can't really imagine what sort of "workflow" (if I may use a word from the day job) would make sense with such a setup.

Pete

If you are running a PC plotter below you can use the Idisplay app running on an iPad so the iPad acts as a PC repeater, works brilliantly and you can control the PC from the iPad touch display.

I have a Standard Horizon CP180e specifically because it was the only plotter I could find that fits into a standard cockpit instrument pod. I find the plotter mounted in the cockpit invaluable, especially when piloting channels/rivers and picking anchorage spots etc. Several manuafturers make displays that will take the standard NMEA 183 signal and show lat long for the chart table, but the simplest way is any DSC VHF. ( BTW, with the CP180e a NMEA position can be taken directly from the active aerial cable thus giving some redundancy from the plotter itself).

The plotter is protected under the sprayhood, and the whole panel comes out over winter.

I suppose there already is such a device in the limited sense of a GPS repeater, of which there are several commerical units already on the market - plus at least one hombrew (http://www.vermontficks.org/gpsd.htm - which is used arse about face, imho) so that course to steer & error, distance to next waypoint etc can be displayed within a small footprint.

I guess what you're talking about is the graphical window equivalent of this, showing (say) a 1/4 mile all around the boat - the actual distance displayed presumably being push-button selectable ? It's an interesting idea - be useful to have something like this next to a text-based GPS repeater. Yes - I can see the merits of this ...

Yes that is exactly what I am talking about. A grapical repeater that shows about 1/4 mile around the boat. Perfect for rivers, channels etc as has been said, but available to fit in a cockpit that cannot take a full size plotter.

or use a handheld.

Well, that's one possibility. The primitive ones I use have basic pre-loaded graphical map waypoint displays OR gps 'course to steer' info - you can't see both at the same time. I suppose 2x GPSs side-by-side would be the answer ... ?

Be nice though, to see buoys, depth contours etc as per the nav station chart plotter in real time.

Yes! Absolutely. I am installing a set up right now and a repeater is exactly what I need.

I have used a NASA GPS Repeater in a past installation but to have graphics rather than tram rails would be a real help in situations such as the Needles.

I have a C90w. Had anyone 'slaved' anything off that?

I believe some of the older Raymarine units can be used but finding them on eBay is hard.

The unit would need to be waterproof, in my opinion.

Tony.

As we normally sail as a couple we only need one display, and just have several places the plotter can be mounted, simples. Mind you in warmer climes I tend tyo do most of my planning in the cockpit anyway.

In my opinion big display is more important than multiple displays

I've had this sort of set up for years -2002 - with a Raymarine works.

Boat is big enough for a 6" repeater up top under sprayhood and 9" plotter below.

Only ever use them if it's foggy or on a channel crossing when I want to use radar. Main crew thinks I'm mad as on their boat chart plotter went on at start of trip and off when tied up.
