I have a small twin cylinder mitsubishi that I hope to marinise myself.
My enquiries show that I will need: 1; an aftermaket heat exchanger
2;a saltwater pump
3; a header tank to increase the
volume of fresh water
4;associated plumbing
5; a marine gearbox and means of attachment
6; engine mounts specific to my boat
7;engine/gearbox controls & guages

A larger alternator wouldnt be a bad idea , also a comppressor pump if a fridge were to be fitted and maybe a calorifier, but I will probably opt for a gas califont as these are fairly cheap here in NZ.
By shopping around the total cost can be kept quite a lot lower than the price of an already marinised unit, and providing care is taken a good installation can result.
I have quite a few other tasks on my boat at the moment so this project is on hold for the time being.

Good luck with your efforts.

Try T.C. Norris, Wood Lane, Isleworth. They should be able to help with supplying the required components and give you a price.

Not knowing too much about it, it looks to me as though the biggest problem you'll encounter would be the Bell housing so you can fit the desired gearbox.

There are also some firms advertising marinisation kits on "boatsandoutboards.com"

Having just removed the gearbox from my Perkins Perama 17HP(the 3 cyl version of yours), you will need the converter bellhousing to connect to the engine and the gearbox you will use. (The hurth g-box is about £550). Also the centre of the flywheel is fitted with a spring loaded drive disc (to presumably take shock loadings)to accept the g/box input splined shaft. There were no locating dowels on the bell housing incidently, it just located on the fixing bolts and the g/box spline.
When Volvo toook over the original Perkins range they "Volvo'ised" them, fitting a heavier flywheel - I believe there was a thread on this a few weeks ago. You will also need a Jabsco pump - this is fitted just under the injection pump - OR you could try an electric pump as supplied by Marlec?
If I remember correctly the alternator supplied on the engine has a small output - look at fitting a larger, say 55Amp one.
You will also need a heat exchanger, exhaust elbow, depending on the make of heat exchanger you could possibly fit the VP one but they are about £100...
Don't forget about waterlocks, exhaust hose, goosenecks, fuel tank(Vetus?) etc. Try Lancing Marine or Norris in Norwich for more info.

Apologies for this newby style enquiry...

I have read the thread and I know how a diesel engine works terrestrially but I am a bit confused about some of the requirements for marinising...

The saltwater pump..? fair do's I suppose you would need a meatier pump to handle salt water , (I'm guessing this is the cooling system)

A header tank for fresh water... (Maybe this is the cooling system.. or not??)

A heat exchanger??

I realise that you could probably write a short novel on the above so I don't expect anyone to go into great detail but maybe some of you can point me towards a website or two that can explain it.. I have looked and only succeeded in finding companies that want to do it for me... (BORING!!!)

thanks in advance...
