Hi all new to the forum,i have a mariners mate that needs a total refit,i have a new volvo penta 3 cylinder engine for the boat ,but no mast sails so i was trying to find out what length mast to fit and best place to find one ,i have looked in the usual places but the only ones i have found are miles away as i am in peterborough any help would be great:)

Mariners Mate.

Your Mariners Mate will need a 20' mast. Very simple rig. Only three stays, fore and two inner shrouds fixed some 3' from the top of the mast. Looks flimsy but quite adequate, leaves the cockpit very accessible.
Don't know how you're going to get a three pot Volvo in her though. We fitted a Nannidiesel 15hp to replace the Yanmar YSE8 previously fitted to our Mariners Mate, Nimitz. Had to hack out the bilge, cement and broken cast iron pipe, to get it in. Engine cover only just fits. Getting eleven knots!
Think these boats were well designed but lost something in the build. Can't believe the way Priory Craft ballasted, the way the vast cockpit drains into the bilge and how the cabin sole drains into the deepest part of the bilge and floods the ballasted area with no way of getting the water out. Also the crazy cockpit hatch.
we plan to fit a 2" cockpit drain this winter and eventually rip out the ballast to replace with lead ingots. Will reduce the overall weight and allow access to the bilge so we can keep her dry.
Hope this helps.
Let me know how you get on.
Ben.

thanks for the info, the engine is a small 3 cylinder volvo penta 20hp ,i have had to cut out all the rear floor as the bulkheads are rotten so will replace all the timber and stiffen floor replace self draining cockpit with large bore pipe raise lip on the engine cover,i am still trying to find a mast rigging for it,might buy another sailing boat to pinch the bits i need.the engine is probaly worth 10 times what the boat is worth as its brand new,

Narrowboat,

if you could post a photo or sketch of the boat a lot of us here might be able to help, especially re. the rig; I'm a great fan of canals, their history and their craft, please feel free to PM me

:)I owned the boat you pictured but never sailed her as I could not afford a deep water mooring and did not want to waste half a season fitting bilge keels whch would have enabled me to keep her on a drying mooring. They are super boats but bilge plates and a self draining cockpit would be helpful.

have you checked the prop dimensions against the power output from that rather large engine ? There may be a significant mismatch.

Olive looked very nice that's been my blue print for fittings and things.i have been looking at inflatable bags I can pull under the boat instead of bilge keels, and I am doing the self draining cockpit as we speak

I've just brought one in need of a refit also, I would be very greatful if any other owners could give me any advise on difficulties etc they faced with restoring one of these lovely boats.

I know ' measured miles ' for calibrating logs, but was previously unaware of ' mad miles ' where one can apparently do anything inc hull speed and sod everyone and everything else !

Any danger of putting a sailing rig on this dragster ?

The mad mile is a nick name for the mile of river on the nene where Perkins engines used to run test on there marine engines with NO speed limit, and yes mast and rigging is ready to be fitted.p.s boat dose 6.5 knots all ways nice to know top speed.

NarrowBoat,

you'll probably find 6.5 knots is ' impossible ' if one follows the formula for max hull speed of ' 1.4 X square root of waterline length '.

I am not saying I doubt you, I don't for a minute, just that in my own experience that formula doesn't work !
