I recently moved house and most of my Merc/Mariner info is in storage but from the two serial No lists that I have here this is the info I have found from them:
on one list serial No 9307795 falls into the range 9248006 to 9420790 which is 1980/81 year built in Belgium
on another list serial No 9307795 falls into 1979 to 1984 years built in Belgium
9807795 appears as 09807795 which is 1994 built in Belgium but I think this is for the 3 cylinder 50hp not the 4 cylinder
around 1986 the Merc/Mariner outboards were re-rated from flywheel hp to prop hp and the 50hp became 45hp, ( also called 50 classic in the Merc range but 45hp rated ) so going by your decals etc I would go with 1980/81 year.
In 1990 the 45hp Merc 4 cylinder became a 40hp for few years ( I think a "work" engine ), as said above most of my books are in storage including my Mariner brochure from around that period.
also, going by the shape of the bottom end ( were the prop is ) in your photo, it does look to be the older shape.
I will try to find a photo of Mariner decals/year.

Standard merc / mariner fuel connector - you won't have and issue getting one of those.

Nah. 1980/81. 1981 was the first model year they were prop rated (not 1986, Tremlett15) and as yours is badged as a 50 not 45 I'd say it is a 1980 model yeargoing on your findings i would say its a 1989 ? given its condition then ?

Just make sure to get the "old type" or the "bayonet type". Google mercury outboard fuel connector and it's full of them, eBay and everywhere.

Jfm you wouldnt know where i can download the wiring diagram for my outboard loom for free or post one on here for me please ? also there`s a mercury switch / contact switch kind of like the old distributor car contact attatched to the loom what1s this for sorry to sound dumb but never had an eletric start outboard before ?

I dont have wiring but Tremlett 15 does. The mercury switch is to cut the ignition if the engine tilts up above about 45deg. Eg if you hit a rock or something. Hi Tremlett. I've seen a few US forums that say 1982 was the year the inline 6ers became prop shaft rated, but I believe they're wrong. What happens is that one person quotes it, then others copy, so it becomes established "fact". It was beginning of 1981 that they became prop shaft rated. My/my father's 90hp in line 6 was serial # 5777855, which is comfortably in the range of serial numbers that are prop shaft rated, and it was a 1981 m/year. He and I collected it from the dealer brand new on 27.1.1981 (I remember the date and the day very well!). I went to a lot of trouble before we bought it to make sure it would be prop shaft rated and had this confirmed by dealer and importer. If you look at the US forums for the cut off serial number when propshaft rating started, you can see that 5777855 is comfortably after that cut off. In conclusion I therefore think the text you've quoted above from a US dealer is incorrect where it says "mid 1982"correction to my post, the Merc/Mariner 500/50hp changed to 45hp in 1986 ( left that wee bit out in error ) other models did start to change from 1981 as jfm said..... a wee typo error ! ( its seems to be happening more often due to my illness MND)

also looking at the decals for the period 1982 > 1986 one can see the engines being re-rated......
a well, at least jfm & I are on correct wave "band" ( wee joke) for the engine year.......
and as jfm says... very nice engine, my 1976 Merc 500/50hp is still running great, have it from new & still 99.9% original....even the spark plugs are original
I will scan the wiring diagrams pages from the service manual and post them up, over the two days. I will use serial No 9307795 as some are different re the year/serial No.
also can you post a photo of your control box ( the single lever control box ) so that I get the correct one.....

yamaha single throttle lever............. i am out on that one.... i do have a CD disc on yams & have one on r rib but cant cut & paste etc from it...
