Thanks lads lots of old sea dogs with plenty of knowledge on here

indeed... and a lot of us like to reminisce.............

here is my Mercury 50hp, short shaft... a rare thing in immaculate condition....should have bloody kept it!
flighty.jpg

and it was replaced with a very run down Winner Cobra with an equally squalid 80hp Mercury.... 6 months restoration over a winter and the boat and engine (with replacement gearbox) looked a bit more presentable..

as for key availability, indeed on ebay there is a complete barrel and key available, but as jfm stated there will be a key number on the barrel, and they are as simple as 1D, 2F etc etc and they are also readily available off ebay for a few quid.

Oooh, as we're reminiscing, here is my old ToP. Bought by my father brand new 1981 when I was a kid, and in our family for about 20 years. I now regret selling it too (for peanuts). I should have kept it and had it crated off to USA for full rebuild. Then, er, kept it in my study :D

I still regret not getting a ToP on something. Saw on feebay a few months back a very clean / time warp late 70's fletcher in brown with 115hp top. One family owned from new, kept at Cornish holiday home, sold for £1400..

...so I will get one at some stage!

Well, talking of o/b reminiscences, this is surely the beast which springs to my mind.
Never owned one unfortunately, but I had the privilege to try a 25' monster with two of them on the transom, and the word astonishing isn't anywhere near a proper description for it.
Would be perfect for your study too, possibly replacing the stereo equipment, which would in fact become redundant.
With a gasoline supply and a water hose, whenever the work bothers you too much, you could make it scream all the way up to 8k+ rpm for a while.
Granted to put any work issue in perspective! :D

I can't see the picture MapiM - the site doesn't like hotlinking

I agree though. The noise of these things at 5000+rpm was just beautiful. The mechanicals were a near silent buzz - 7 main bearings on the crank and needle rollers on all journals, all 19 of them. And of course the pistons were tiny lightweight things - only ~250cc per pot. But the induction roar and nice exhaust note was wonderful

The porting was of course a secondary consideration to developing power, and the thing was designed long before California and other places thought of emission laws. Some days it felt/smelt like 10% of the gasoline got spat out unburnt! The study would therefore need some ventilation. But it would be worth it :-)

Doh! I didn't notice that because I made a quick search for a pic of that o/b, linked it in my post, and it worked.
But obviously I could only see it because I had just opened that website, and the pic was cached in my PC.
Oh, well, the Mercury ad with a pic of the engine and a few interesting comment on it can be seen just clicking here, for those interested:

Nobody know the answer :(

ok so no one knows the year of my outboard ?

the number you posted is not a serial No, so it can not be dated from that, the serial No is on a plate on the mounting bracket between the fixing points that sits onto the transom, is the plate is removed ???? then it could be stamped on the engine block.

the number should be 7 numbers or a letter with 6 numbers

ie:

5869427

A912978

Bxxxxxx

Cxxxxxx

9549369

these are examples..... does the engine have a plate on the clamp/bracket facing into the outboard well ?

does it look as if it has been removed ?

the serial No should be on the plate as shown in this photo ( bottom left hand side, arrow in red pointing to plate )
