i have a 1990 mariner 4hp 2 stroke outboard ive just got it running ok with new plug and adjustment of the mixture as it was crappy at low speed and a bit slow to pick up,the thing is should it have an air filter as bolted onto the carb is a black plastic circular box ive taken it off and there is then another screw and it comes apart looking to me as if it houses an air filter?i dont have a manual as im struggling to find one...any help would be good.. the engine serial is 4m 6e0 11.... thanks barry.

mariner o/b manuals

You should be able to loacte a pdf copy of the manual for your o/b via this link:

I hope you have been able to locate a manual from the link above ... not always easy to find the right one!

It is quite normal for outboards not to have an air filter ... they dont get a lot of use on dry dusty roads ;)

4M 6E011... is a Japanese built engine i can only find parts diagrams for US and Belgium built models

Is it a rebadged Yamaha

As a matter of interest, my Mariner 2.5hp 2stroke, doesn't have an air filter. It's just a plastic housing and that's the way it's meant to be.

It's more than likely that the 4hp is the same.

thanks guy's for the help i was not sure as this is all new to me!!!! someone said that the engine was made by yamaha?anyway will go and look for the manual via that link...cheers baz :D
