Hi all

Bought a 2nd hand engine from a dealer last wk and there was only a drip of water coming out the seawater cooling
every second or so there would be a drip
Thing is it didnt seem enough to cool the engine and was wondering if anyone could give me a idea how much to expect as ive taken it back to him and he is fixing it
All over engines ive had there was a constant flow of water coming out the side
Any ideas

What you see is only a tell tale, AKA pee hole. The bulk of the cooling water leaves with the exhaust gas i.e. under water where you dont see it.

The little dribble you see may indicate that the waterpump requires a new impeller (always wise to fit a new impeller to a recently acquired engine if you do not know when it was last renewed). It may mean that the water passages are scaled or it may simply be that the telltale is bunged up.

The first thing you could have done was to clean the telltale outlet, the hose and the fitting on the engine (take care often fragile plastic fittings are used).

If that does not do the trick a new pump impeller is next on the list.

BTW you should be able to download an owners manual if you do not have one from the "Download Center" at http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/

Hope the dealer sorts it out. Dont accept it until you are happy with a good steady pee stream and then make absolutely sure the engine is not overheating.

I had this problem with ours when we were locking in to our canal before being lifted out. It seemed to be running ok so locked in and moored alongside with the same drip drip.

Brought it home and put it in the bin and fired it up and still the drip drip. Found my self a fine piece of wire and poked it up the tell tale and suddenly the usual stream of water started coming out.

Changed impeller this year and found that two little paddles had come off. So it was probably a bit of debris from these that blocked the dribble.

On mine, the problem was where the telltale pipe goes into the bock: it had corroded, and constricted the telltale pipe down to drips. The actual flow of water thru the head was fine.

I pulled the pipe, cleaned up and repainted the area around the hole, refitted it (don't push it too far in!), and it pees like a good-un now.

I have a Mariner 4HP Saildrive. Even at idle, the cooling water p*sses out in a constant stream. Anything less and I'd be worried. Sounds like you have a broken impeller or a blockage somewhere...

Where is the tell tale on 4 HP Japanese Mariner

Hello, I understand this thread is a bit old but I have a Japanese 4hp Mariner. The motor has been sitting a while and I started it up and there is no water coming from any anywhere. Can anyone tell me where the tall tale is on this motor? There is what seems to be an exhaust port on the backside but there there is no water at all coming out of it.

The model is 4M 6E0 S 071735

Thanks, Dave

6EO-071735 make it a 1985 model

AFAIK there is no telltale on the cooling system but i do not have any info on the Japanese made models. An opened ended hose, or a hose leading to an outlet nipple in the casing would be what you are looking for if there is one

You should be able to download an owners manual from the download centre at Brunswick marine, http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/download/main?type=corp

There should be some water, droplets or a mist being blown out of the exhaust back pressure relief ports.

If the motor has been idle for sometime a replacement waterpump impeller would be wise.

VicS,
Thanks, yes I looked for an outlet hose and saw nothing readily noticable other than the one port directly on the back of the motor which was only producing exhaust (or at least there was air pressure coming out of it). I tried inserting thin wire into it to get out any spiders and such with no luck. Didn't want to run it too long though.

How do you know that the motor is a 1985?

Thanks, Dave

Great, thank you sir. I did notice the block has a Yamaha symbol stamped on it. It looks like a nice little motor. My dad gave it to me a few years ago and I haven't used it since, I'd like to get her running again. I am at work and haven't had time to look over any of these resource yet, but any idea what the fuel/oil ratio is on this motor, 50/1 I assume?

Thanks again for the resources, I will check them out when I get home, Dave

I ran one of these for about 20 years. As others have said first clear out the tell tale pipe. If that does not work you need a new impeller. However do not think that just because you have a flow from the tell tale that all is well. The chamber that the tell tale opens from is large and is most unlikely to block but the cylinder head has small water ways that will block by the end of every season if used in salt water unless you religiously run it in fresh water after every use. Even then it is wise to remove the cylinder head each season to ensure the waterways are clear.

PeterR,
Thanks for the input. After tinkering around with it a bit it looks like a nice little motor. The one I have seems to be in pretty good shape.

Here is an update on what I've done. I went ahead and picked up an impeller and dropped the lower unit. I found the water input ports were clogged with what looked like that dirt that wasps use to make those mud nests. I also found the impeller was partially shredded, missing a couple of spokes (one of which was partially clogging the main intake). So cleaner her all out and put her back together and she fired right up with a decent stream. Its not jetting out like some of the other motors I've had but its decent enough and it is cool water.

I do seem to be having a little trouble with the carb though. I have to play around with the choke to keep it running evenly. So it looks like I may have to do some carb work. I searched the motor and it doesn't seem to have a fuel filter so I drained all of the fuel out and cleaned the tank the best I could. Probably won't hurt to break down the carb and rebuild. I don't have a small boat right now, but I'd like to take it out and run it for a while before I do anything too extensive. Maybe it just needs to be run for awhile.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

Dave

I searched the motor and it doesn't seem to have a fuel filter

Not part of the fuel tap?

A bowl on the bottom of the tap is the American design.

Yamahas I think have a gauze filter projecting into the tank on the top of the tap
