Hi, I have a mariner 2hp outboard that will not start. There is no speak at the plug (or it won’t jump the gap). If I hold (don’t recommend this) the plug I still get no shock but if I manage to touch the actual tip I certainly do. If I put a screwdriver in again I get a shock but cannot get it to jump to ground even if held a mm away. So I’m guessing the spark it too weak? Any ideas? Thanks

If it was completely dead I would say check the stop/kill button,

Worth a quick check perhaps. Check HT lead

You don't give the serial number, or even the year so do not know if it is a points ignition or CD.

If points check, clean & reset them , inspect coil for overall condition. Condenser is another suspect

If CD inspect condition of HT coil. If coil looks OK prime suspect is the CD unit

I’m not sure if year or serial number. I’ll find out tomorrow if I can. It’s definitely not the stop/kill button (I have discounted it). It’s strange that it is definitely giving volts (they feel quite strong) but won’t jump the gap.

Don't know if it's relevant, but I had an odd problem with my Tohatsu a few years ago. It turned out to be corrosion on the earth of the coil. A quick clean and a dab of copper grease and all was well again. May be worth looking at
