My otherwise very reliable old outboard is now getting emulsified oil in the final drive (bevel gear) box. I can easily change the oil/water seal on the prop shaft but I believe there is another seal above the bevel gear which means I need to split the two parts. This bottom section is attached to the shaft casing (I think) only by the anode securing bolt and a separate bolt, both of which I have removed. I have removed the power leg from the motor but cannot separate the bottom section from the shaft casing. Is it just a question of hitting it hard enough or is there some special trick? Grateful for any help/advice.

You dont say the age or the model number but as far as I can see just the two bolts and it should fall off!

Vertical drive shaft rusted into the crankshaft is a common problem with some but this one appears to have the drive shaft in two parts and if you have taken the powerhead off anyway then there's no problem from there.

Usually the prop shaft seal is the more vulnerable due to fishing line attacking it but on yours the pump protects it a bit ...(at least I assume the pump is on the prop shaft.. it is in the diags I am looking at.) but yes there is a seal on the drive shaft as well.

Note which way round the seals are fitted! looks like only one at each location .. (some have two back to back)

Also replace the sealing washers ( O rings?) on the oil drain and level screws .. the experts say never reuse them)

The diagram i am looking at is HERE

But I think that is of the American and Belgium made ones. Far eastern ones may be different.

Thanks VicS. Your reputation as the outboard guru is obviously well founded. My model is exactly as per the drawing in your link. However, so far I have been unable to separate the two parts so I assume there is some corrosion. Time for a more brutal approach, I think, since the two parts certainly did not fall apart.

I'll report back!

Stubborn mariner

I discovered that the two parts were being held together by a special salt water cement which if I could isolate it, would be marketable!

Anyway, the gear drive unit is now off the leg and work can progress. The really bad news is that I have found out how absurdly expensive Mariner oil seals are! Has anybody got a good source for reasonably priced Mariner spares? Thanks to VicS for the help to date.

Well I did try and help :(

Some parts are the same as Johnson parts which are alot cheaper. I use Johnson waterpump impellars and shear pins. I'm not certain about oil seals but Walkers Yacht Chandlery in Progress Rd Leigh on Sea are good for such things.

It's a Tohatsu engine.

Or Visa Versa.. :) is true.

But it's interesting the number of parts that are common across a number of manufacturers at this engine size, and the difference in price.

The Head Gasket, Power Head Gasket, Water Pump Impeller & Shear Pin are all now Johnson parts on my Mariner 2.5. Same size, fitment but much cheaper than the mariner parts.

Always handy to deal with a real person when buying these things. Can save you plenty of cash.

They are all Tohatsu. It's badge engineering.
They are the second largest producer of outboards in the world and a leader in innovative design with the environmentally conscious TLDI series of Two-stroke Low pressure Direct Injection, DFI, outboards that meet current EPA regulations for the U.S. Mercury outboards, in the U.S., from 30 hp and below are rebadged Tohatsus. All Nissan outboard engines in North America are Tohatsus with a Nissan decal.

Mariners are mainly rebadged Tohatsus, Yamahas (up to 1986) and Mercurys.
