Hi,

I have just bought a second hand Mariner 2.5hp 2 stroke outboard, around 10 years old in excellent condition.

Unfortunately there was no users manual/guide and I have little to no idea where to go from here.

I wouldnt want to try using the engine without having read the details on all the operations.

Is there somewhere online I could download a manual or perhaps a reader has an electronic copy they would be kind enough to email to me?

Any guidance very gratefully received, thank you.

Mariners of that age onwards were 100:1, but run very well on 50:1 and that is preferable as some Mariners did suffer from lack of lubrication. I've run my 3.3 from new on 50:1, new being 8 years ago, with no problems of starting etc.

Vital tip no. 1, when you want to stop the engine and do not intend to use it for a period of weeks plus do NOT stop on the kill-cord or stop switch but turn off the engine fuel cock and let it run dry. That prevents gumming in the carb and oil residues left behind to block what are actually very small jets.

Vital tip no. 2 - tape two or more spare shear pins plus split pins to the tiller handle cos' trust me, when it all goes pear shaped you absolutely will not find the spares you thought you had.

They are a great little engine and require minimal care. Keep an eye on the gearbox oil, both for consistancy and level. Check by removing the top plug, fill by pushing it up from the BOTTOM plug until it comes out the top, then seal top before bottom. If the oil is milky/creamy you've got oil seal problems and need to obtain the prop shaft oil seals and drive shaft lower seals. If this proves to be the case and you don't know how to do it, read this thread earlier this week: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2325545/an/0/page/7#2325545

Somebody on this forum previously pointed me in the direction of a PDF file with the owners manual for this engine.

Lots of repitition in multiple languages, but still found it useful

I have the PDF but not the link If you can't find it by consulting Dr Google then PM me and can send the PDF

Thanks for the replies, now sorted with manual from kind reader.

Other quick Q's I cant seem to immediately find answers to.

1) How big is the internal fuel tank? Im guessing at about alitre and an half looking at it?

2) how long will this engine fun on a full tank. I know this depends on throttle load, weight etc, but with an average inflatable and varying throttle, what should I expect?

Thanks again.

My experience with this engine is not quite long enough...

Like, you cant quite get back to the upper pontoon from the pub in Newton with 3 on board at midnite....

And you cant quite get back from the Co-op in Dartmouth with all your groceries to the anchorage just below Ditsham...

Best carry a spare can....

Great little engine and run forever on a full tank! Unfortunately the tank never stays full! At half throttle I think you have about 2 hours running. Open up more than that and you may easily halve the time. Have used one to push 30ft yacht across channel and towed same boat from Fowey to Plymouthwith a dinghy alongside.
