mariner 115 that won\'t start

I'v emoved a battery aft out of the way of tanks, wired correctly. Starter previously grat, first time, now will turn, with cog engaging but won't fire up. Any thoughts?

Re: mariner 115 that won\'t start

Do you mean you have permanently moved your battery?

Is the engine turning over quickly or is it laboured?

If it is laboured it looks as though the engine is not getting enough power to turn it over fast enough to start
Possible reasons:

Battery has insufficient power due to charge state or failed cell.
Poor connections in cable to starter motor
Inadequate cable cross section for the length of cable between battery and starter motor if it has been moved.

Measure the voltage at the battery and starter motor whilst turning over and see if there is a significant voltage drop.

If the engine is turning over quickly but fails to start the problem is probably elsewhere. Is the fuel switched on? Is fuel getting through? is air getting through? if petrol is there a spark? (beware sparks/petrol vapour in confined space)

Is the battery charged?

Sorry but needed to ask, maybe a stupid question but could be relavent.
Have you extended or shortened any cables?
Are the new connections clean, free of grease & tight?

Possibly try a known fully charged battery.

Other than this very little has changed from your original installation.

Has the engine been tilted further back (had a 200 that wouldn't start if not near vertical)?

By altering the battery cables you havent inadvertently disconected the dead man.
Just a thought.

Re: mariner 115 that won\'t start

Permanently moved a fully chared battery that worked first time before new leads (increased in length from 2 to 5m each). Good thick core cable in excess of that previously on the boat, tho' the pos cable is thicker than the neg. Connections appear sound, neg terminal, as previously is well greased. Cutout is in 'run' position, fast idle engaged, fuel in tank and fully primed. Rest of engine serviced 1 month ago and running beautifully

Re: mariner 115 that won\'t start

If the cutout is in run position, and fast idle engaged, what happens when you put a meter across the contacts of the safety cut-out and the start in neutral switch?

The point of my post was that the most likely cause of not starting whilst spinning over, and probably the easiest to tick off the 'checked' list, are those items that are designed to stop the engine from starting in the first place.

Also consider (if fitted) wires to oil in injection tank, and sensors on trim / tilt that may prevent starting if tilted too high.

Re: mariner 115 that won\'t start

I'll check the points-thanks.

There are wires from the oil-2 plugs currently not connected to anything, but I'm sure they were like this before I started messing.

Again I'll try the tilt tho' again I'm only starting maybe 30 deg from vertical

Thanks again
