Marinecall terminology question

When they say on marinecall...." SE F3,Locally F4" what do they mean locally ? Are they talking about apparent wind or what ?. Stupid question but I bet I'm not the only one who doesn't know.

It just means there may be local areas where the wind strength might be a bit higher. This is usually round headlands or in constricted channels such as the Western Solent.

It may also be that in a large sea area, the wind strength round a weather system will vary enough to create different wind conditions in different parts of the area

Doesn't matter - it wont bear any relationship to the weather experienced.

It just means that the wind may be blowing a bit harder in some places than others.

Apparent wind is what you get from eating too many Baked Beans.... It is also the wind you actually observe on your boat while under way, allowing for the boats speed and direction. So if a stinkie is travelling South at 15 knots into a 10 knot Southerly breeze, the apparent wind is Southerly 25 knots. Turn 180 degrees and the apparent wind is now a 5 Knot Northerly.

Plus the baked bean factor.
