Looking to replace my current seating with firm open-cell foam. Either have to completely replace the uphostery or look to improve the fitting of what I have just now: velcro-based cloth (redo with a stainless zip?).

Can anyone recommend a good supplier and/or fitter in the west of Scotland? Would there be a specific type of material I should be asking for?

Would it be worth my while learning to do myself or is this a one off better done by experts?

For the foam, there are on-line suppliers (I have looked at them but did not bookmark any) and their sites will provide info about grades of foam. Then Hawke House or Kayospruce are worth a look. If you are interested in making covers, Hawke House runs courses in Gosport.

Locally, I got a quote from Baillies, who are at the railway station at Johnstone. I heard of them at the Kip used boat show. Wanting to keep my limbs, I went to Jacksons upholsterers who were in Argyle Street, Glasgow (west of Hope Street and opposite Victor Morris, purveyors of lethal weapons and armourers to the neds.) They were a LOT less expensive and very good. By the way, it is often plastic zips that are used in cushions. Crappy things they are too. Maybe your Velcro is quitw a good idea.

Hope this helps

There is an upholsterer at Kingholm Quay on the Nith, just below Dumfries. I have no direct expereince of them, but a friend has talked to them and has been sufficiently impressed that he's taking his Fisher round there for complete relining. That's "Barlion Upholstery. The Dock, Kingholm Quay. Dumfries contact Bill tel 01387 269200" according to http://nithnav.loggerhead.org/Services.html

Owen Sails at Tralee Bay, Benderloch, Oban have an upholstery department. This might not be the cheapest option but they are a very competent company with an excellent reputation. If a high quality job is your objective get a quote from them. I have only used them for sails so far but their attention to detail and customer service is exemplary.
Also good for hoods and covers.

I would recommend Covercraft based at Kip marina.
I have had excellent service from them.

I have just bent my foresails on having had them valeted by a company mentioned in this thread, bearing in mind the sails are less than 2 seasons old, they know look like they are 22 and have been dragged along a duel carriageway behind their van. Not happy at all!

As ever, terrific advice. I'll follow this up; probably go with the one recommended twice and an additional one from Johnstone and across from the ned shop. With respect to the velcro, I'll double check this when the foam arrives. Might well be the best option.

Thanks everyone.

Sally at Jess sail in Ardrossan may be able to help you. 01294 467311

I endorse this. Did the whole boat worth of cushions 2 winters back and she made an excellent job. Even insisted on going to Rhu to check the fit, despite my taking the old ones to her. Great price, great quality, great service.
