Over recent winters I seen various interesting, amusing and helpful threads on here. An incident recently prompted me to start this one. Hopefully it will prove to be helpful at least.
We had the pressure relief valve fail during our last trip of the year to France. When the boat was lifted this week, I removed it and checked the ASAP Supplies website and found it for £19.51 incl VAT and a nice 5% discount from the RRP of £20.54. Rather than drive from Southampton to Fareham, I did a general search to find one locally. Screwfix sell the same thing without any discount for £4.07 including VAT.
So a challenge for the winter. What is your best buy for boaty items?

Fuel hoses for my previous Volvo Penta 2002, VP price £110 each, Hyphose Southampton made up for £20.20 the pair. Ok, maybe engine parts prices not fair.

charcoal filter for the dirty toilet tank - modified with a screwfit union for £20 and bought charcoal pellets for cheap as opposed to replacing the filter every year at £140 +
pay roughly £5 per year on charcoal.

Outdrive gearbox oil from Smith and Allan £40 for 10 litres including delivery.
Volvo Penta £200 plus delivery.

Jon

got any pics to show what filter you have and how exactly you modded it?
I recon mine was something like 30-40euro and it's just a 50mm dia by 200mm long pipe but would be happy to change in internals each season for a few euros...

cheers

Kubota oil filter. Cross check the part number and then search ebay for it. Usually half price or less. Alternator belt for same-----Visit my local car accessory shop and get the auto version for peanuts.

You seem to all be celebrating the fact that you found a bargain, when what it looks like to me is that, as usual, the marine parts people are charging insultingly high prices.

Ditto - I get most of my Beta engine consumable spares from our local car spares distributor company. Although to be fair the Beta prices are not that bad a price.

It's worse in aviation. The alternator on a Cessna 172 is the same as a Ford part except 10x the price. And you can't use the automotive one as everything has to be certified on a plane.

I think you're 100% correct. There's also an argument that says buying from builders merchants or internet shops is killing the chandlers. I don't think there is an answer that's right or wrong. My original idea was to add a list of correctly priced items as a resource.
