Afternoon all,

Any tips on a half decent marine plywood supplier in the Leigh on Sea (ish) area?

Need a single sheet of 18mm and it's proving a touch tricky.

Southend Timber had some proper marine a couple of years ago - worth asking them. Just between Sutton Road roundabout and the fire station.

Leigh Timber sold me some but I'm sure it was only exterior grade which was half the price and adequate for what I wanted.

And don't forget Barry at Dauntless 07771 944288 who has proper boat timber but possibly not a whole sheet.

Whats it going to be used for?

I ask as you may not need marine ply. Either Baltic Birch or WBP plywood would be fine for many uses. If you require a nice veneer wood finish, consider applying a veneer to either of the above, very easy to do, Veneers can be brought mailorder from the likes of Vale Veneers

If it's for the cockpit floor then you're probably going to sheath it with cloth and epoxy(?) so anything half decent - WBP - will do. 18mm hardwood marine ply will cost £££ and may not be necessary. Another alternative would be to take 12mm WBP and epoxy 6mm marine on the outer layer to build up the 18mm you need ... that does sound quite heavy for a cockpit floor. I used 9mm on my Settimo Velo but there is a significant amount of framing supporting it.

Thanks for the replies. Yep it's for the cockpit floor but I'm now planning not to cover it in epoxy and use a more simple covering plus a bit of anti-slip (sand) so it's relatively easy to replace should the time come again.

I said marine ply only as when doing some major boat work in the past, it was Marine Ply or nothing. (That said, I was much better financially off then)

Whatever ply I use will be soaked on the back and edges with SP300 epoxy and wood coated on the top so maybe WBP will suffice ?

rgds,

Nik

check the grades available they vary greatly in veneer quality & glue

Birch is available in WBP grades and the thinner sheets I've heard called aeroply - so strong enough for Mosquitos probably. Trouble is that birch itself is not a very durable wood at all, so the glue would hold but the laminations might soften.
I did a cockpit floor not too long ago and decided on BS1088 marine ply - after all it's quite a demanding environment and used 9mm as there are several bearers supporting it. It's not easy getting part sheets, boatyards hold onto their offcuts as do I, but worth asking around.
I did use exterior on the companionway hatch lid recently cos I had some of the right thickness. Good coat of epoxy round the cut edges should seal it and it's not as soggy as the cockpit floor.

Supplier

Try DHH timber they are at Purfleet & Rochford Marine & all other ply.
Never used them, but came recommended to me. 01708864626
