Marine Ply - standards to change???

The term 'Marine Ply' has been bastardised for some time to the point it is almost meaningless. It used to mean quality, using quality glue and even thickness of layers of ply that have a minimal amount of shakes, holes, and fillers. E.g. when we built a 17' plywood day cruiser in the early 70's 9mm (or equiv. imp.) marine ply was 7 even plys using mahogany or similar, I recently tried to buy some and the best I could get was from a well known supplier and that was 5 ply with the 2nd and 4th layers much thicker than the rest and when inspected 'end on' they were obviously of lesser quality. The term is used in the building industry to represent ordinary exterior ply and often not even 'water boil point'.

Marine ply should not have any gaps in it, unlike wbp, but the bonding is the same. If you want a marine plywood you need a specalized dealer. i needed some faced ply for internal use, i managed to find a company in bristol. 1/4 sheet 3/8 thick cost about £45. Do not use a builder merchants, they might call it marine ply but the quality is rubbish, its more like wbp.

Does anyone know what the current situation is with BS1088? Can you still buy it?

Latest News - Reports in the Timber Trades Journal (4th November 2000) suggest that an unnamed benefactor has agreed to salvage the BS1088 standard at the eleventh hour. "This is our only hope at the moment because, with no money coming from any of the other interested parties, there is no other way that a revision can be made," said Malcolm Cowley, NPPD chairman.

Re: Marine Ply - Still available

This stuff is pretty acceptable.
www.hulley-marine.co.uk/bruynzeel1.html

The test with any ply is to bend a thin sheet -say5-9.6mm- and leave it for a couple of days and then inspect it-if it really is uniformly glued, gapless and with minimal fillers there will be no obvious hard spots or ridges anywhere along the curve-just the qualities desired for decks and hull.

Re: Marine Ply - Still available

Bruynzeel ply is the cats pajamas. Wonderfull stuff that rquires practicaly no finishing but at the price charged so it should.
